    These are the 6 sports added to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles

    The Olympics are constantly evolving, with sports being added and removed all the time. This year, breaking makes its debut, while baseball, softball and karate will not return after appearing at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

    After Paris, the next Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028. You may be wondering what sports will be held there again in four years, and what sports will be held then.

    Luckily, we already know. Here are the six sports announced for the 2028 competition, including several returning sports:

    1.Recurring: Cricket

    Cricket’s first and only appearance at the Olympics came at the 1900 Paris Games. However, according to the New York Times , only two of the four teams showed up: Great Britain and France. The publication also noted that the length of cricket matches, which can last up to five days, poses a problem for an event as packed as the Olympics. For the 2028 Olympics, teams will play the increasingly popular Twenty20 format, which involves just 20 overs, the term for each team’s six deliveries in an innings.

    2.Back: Lacrosse

    Like cricket, lacrosse made its Olympic debut over 100 years ago. The sport appeared at the Olympic Games in St. Louis in 1904 and London in 1908, but has not officially returned since. However, three exhibition games were held in the 1920s through the 1940s: Amsterdam in 1928, Los Angeles in 1932 and London in 1948.

    3.Back: Baseball

    Baseball has a long history with the Olympics. It first debuted in 1992 and disappeared after 2008. It briefly returned four years ago, but was not included in Paris this year.

    4.Returning: Softball

    Softball has followed a similar trajectory to baseball, though it made its Olympic debut four years later in 1996. As for why both sports are returning for the 2028 Games, the fact that Los Angeles is hosting the games may have played a role. “Given the rich tradition, universality, global appeal and enormous popularity of our sports, including in the U.S., I know they will be a huge hit in L.A., across the country and with millions of Olympic fans worldwide,” Riccardo Fraccari, president of the World Baseball Softball Confederation, said in part in a statement last year.

    5.Debut: Squash

    According to USA Today, squash will make its Olympic debut after previous failed attempts.

    6.Finally making its debut: Flag football

    According to a report from The Athletic last year, the NFL supports flag football being included in the Olympics. Scott Hallenbeck, CEO of USA Football, told the publication that the NFL was “certainly supportive of the concept of flag football in the Olympics and as an opportunity to grow the sport around the world.” Part of the appeal of flag football compared to American football is the size of the team. In 2028, flag football will be five-on-five teams, not 11-on-11, and there will be both men’s and women’s flag football games.
