Three Tricks to Prevent Battery Drain on Your Ring Doorbell — Including the Exact ‘Vampire’ Features to Avoid

According to RING, your doorbell battery will last six to twelve months on a single charge, but this depends on its activity.

If you need to charge or replace your battery sooner, you may be falling into one of three pitfalls.

There are three battery draining features that you shouldn't use too often if you want your battery to last long.

There are three battery draining features that you shouldn’t use too often if you want your battery to last long.

ELIMINATE WI-FI PROBLEMS

Make sure your Ring Doorbell has a strong Wi-Fi connection.

According to Ring, “If your Ring Video Doorbell or security camera is running out of battery too quickly, a poor Wi-Fi connection may be the culprit.

“A poor connection can cause your doorbell or camera to frequently disconnect and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network. This wastes energy and drains your battery faster.”

A dead battery isn’t the only symptom of slow internet access.

Other signs that your Wi-Fi connection isn’t optimal include your doorbell frequently disconnecting, audio and video quality dropping, notifications being delayed, missing motion events, and having issues connecting to Live View.

VAMPIRE FEATURES

There are three battery draining features that you should avoid using too often if you want your battery to last long.

These are Live View, Snapshot Capture and Advanced Motion Detection.

The Ring app lets you see if Snapshot Capture and Advanced Motion Detection are draining your doorbell battery.

SETTING UP MOTION ZONES

When set up properly, motion zones can reduce the number of notifications you receive, which can save your Ring device battery.

A Motion Zone is the area around your Ring device that you want the device to monitor.

The device alerts users via the built-in motion detector when there is movement in your home.

The customizable feature allows users to define a specific area that their Ring device should cover, while ignoring anything outside that area.

But if the motion detector is too sensitive, users can be inundated with Ring notifications on their smartphone, alerting them to activity nearby.

If that area is too large, the device may register too much activity that the user does not need to be alerted to, such as people walking outside on the sidewalk or cars driving past their house.

“If you know your trash is always picked up between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. on Tuesdays, you can schedule your motion detection to turn off at that time,” Ring experts explain.

To stop these “false positive” motion alerts, users can reduce the motion zone or change the time periods.

To do this, open the Ring app > tap the three horizontal lines at the top left > Devices > Select your device > Motion settings > Editing motion zones > Default zone And adjust the zone > Finished > To rescue.

Amazon’s Guide to Positioning Ring Doorbells

Here’s the official advice…

One of the biggest mistakes people make is mounting their Ring Video Doorbell too high, thinking they have to do this to capture people’s faces.

As illustrated above, viewing faces is not a problem if the Ring Video Doorbell is mounted at the proper height of approximately 4 feet (1.2 meters) above the ground.

The second way your Ring Video Doorbell sees the world is through a network of PIR, or passive infrared, motion sensors. These are heat sensors that detect movement by monitoring heat within their detection area.

Because people are hotter than the surrounding areas, the heat readings change when a person enters the detection area. The motion sensors register this change as movement and send an alert.

The motion sensors in your Ring Video Doorbell are designed to detect motion up to 155 degrees horizontally and from 5 to 25 feet (1.5 to 7.5 meters) away from the fixture.

They are also more sensitive to horizontal movements in the detection area than to vertical ones.

If you mount your doorbell too high, you’re more likely to be bothered by the heat from passing cars than from incoming visitors.
