Thunder could trade for the former Celtics big man under contract with the Trail Blazers

The Oklahoma City Thunder are very thin on big men these days.

Star center Chet Holmgren will be out indefinitely with a pelvic fracture suffered against the Golden State Warriors, and the Thunder are already missing Isaiah Hartenstein.

With Hartenstein not returning for the next few weeks, Oklahoma City currently lacks a true center.

Is it time for the Thunder to enter the trade market and land a center to keep things in check until Hartenstein and later Holmgren return?

One player who might be a good fit for the Thunder right now is former Boston Celtics big man Robert Williams III, who other teams — including the New York Knicks — have reason to trade between now and the deadline.

While Williams III is also injury-prone, he is certainly available as his current team, the Portland Trail Blazers, has two centers ahead of him on the depth chart in Deandre Ayton and Donovan Clingan.

When his body is right, Williams III is one of the best defensive centers in the game, not to mention an excellent lob threat. Williams III finished No. 7 in the 2021-2022 Defensive Player of the Year voting.

The Thunder would be taking a health risk by acquiring Williams III, but if he can stay on the floor, he would add even more athleticism to an already vibrant roster.

Oklahoma City should call Portland and ask what it would take to acquire Williams III.
