Tide roll Tigers after Brady Cook leaves game injured

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Brady Cook’s game lasted five full drives.

So did Missouri football’s shot at saving its season in Tuscaloosa.

The Tigers hung with Alabama for most of the first half Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, but Mizzou will return home with a 34-0 loss at the hands of the Crimson Tide and a likely CFP-dream-ending second loss on the season.

The Crimson Tide (6-2, 3-2 SEC) were wholly unspectacular, but most certainly capitalistic.

Backup Missouri quarterback Drew Pyne entered the game with a little over four minutes left in the first half and a six-point deficit as Cook jogged to the locker room. On his fourth play after entering, Pyne attempted a deep shot over the middle to Luther Burden III that was picked off by star Alabama safety Malachi Moore and returned 31 yards.

It took two plays for Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe to put his team in a goal-to-go situation. It took one more play from there for Jam Miller to punch in a 3-yard, game-altering score.

Pyne was picked off two more times in the third quarter and was replaced by preferred walk-on JR Blood at the beginning of the fourth quarter after going 5-for-11 for 37 yards and three interceptions. Pyne later reentered the game.

Cook and the Missouri offense hadn’t had much luck, crossing midfield just three times in his five drives and stalling out on each of them for five punts. But the Tigers hadn’t been in much peril, either, mostly running the ball and looking to play underneath Alabama. Cook was 7-of-12 for 30 yards before leaving the game.

Alabama ran Missouri (6-2, 2-2) ragged on short fields and with quick turnovers between possessions. Miller ran home two touchdowns, Justice Haynes rushed in one and Milroe ran in another as the Tide ran for more than 200 yards.

Mizzou’s shot at making the College Football Playoff is almost certainly shot with two blowout losses on the resume.

Missouri football at Alabama score updates

This section will be updated once the game begins.

1 2 3 4 F
Missouri 0 0 0 0 0 0
Alabama 3 10 14 7 34 34

5:38 p.m.: Drew Pyne is back in at QB for Missouri.

5:35 p.m.: Justice Haynes runs in a 35-yard touchdown for Alabama.

5:28 p.m.: JR Blood is in the game at quarterback for Missouri. That was not on my bingo card for today.

5:17 p.m.: Alabama touchdown, Jam Miller runs it in from 11 yards to cap the drive on the back of Pyne’s third pick. Getting ugly in Tuscaloosa.

5:05 p.m.: Drew Pyne is picked off again. That’s two straight drives and the third time today. This one was picked off by Qua Russaw.

4:59 p.m.: Alabama attempts three passes on the other end of the turnover, and all of ’em go incomplete. Small victories for Mizzou, which forces a three-and-out.

4:53 p.m.: Ouch. Drew Pyne is picked off for the second time today while looking for Luther Burden deep. Bray Hubbard intercepts the pass, and this day is going from bad to extremely bad in a hurry.

4:43 p.m.: Touchdown Alabama. Jalen Milroe dives over the right pylon on a 9-yard scoring run and essentially end this as a competitive contest. That drive went 80 yards in six plays.

4:40 p.m.: Alabama starts with the ball, and pretty quickly moves into Mizzou territory with a chunk play on the ground from Jalen Milroe that went 32 total yards.

4:16 p.m.: Blake Craig misses a 59-yard field goal attempt and Mizzou heads into the locker room scoreless and reeling. There were some questionable decisions (throwing across the middle of the field with no timeouts and 10 seconds on the clock) from Pyne and the offense in that end-of-half drill. You’ve got to think either Cook comes back to this game, or Missouri stands no shot.

4:08 p.m.: Touchdown Alabama. Jamarion Miller runs it in from three yards, and this could get ugly for MU. No Cook as the offense returns.

4:02 p.m.: Alabama gets a free play because Kristian Williams jumped offsides, and Milroe takes advantage, finding Emmanuel Wilson for a 28-yard gain and an instant goal-to-go possesion at the 3-yard line.

4 p.m.: Brady Cook left the game to the locker room and Drew Pyne was almost instantly picked off by Malachi Moore. Cook is being evaluated, per a team spokesperson.

3:54 p.m.: Field goal Alabama. A holding penalty on Justice Haynes moved Alabama back out of the red zone, and a couple incomplete shots to the end zone go incomplete afterward. Another hold for the MU defense. Graham Nicholson converts his second of the day from 39 yards.

3:50 p.m.: Alabama moves into the red zone on a third down, 21-yard pass to Germie Bernard.

3:43 p.m.: Missouri stalls out again just inside Alabama territory, and for the fifth straight drive, Luke Bauer is on to punt. This one just heads into the end zone, so Alabama will be spared poor field position, this time.

3:40 p.m.: Jalen Milroe very nearly hit Kobe Prentice for a midfield-crossing touchdown, but slightly overthrew the receiver. Then, Johnny Walker Jr. landed his second sack of Milroe on third down of the day. Then, personal foul on Alabama for an illegal hit on Luther Burden III, who had called fair catch. Mizzou starting its drive at its own 41.

3:36 p.m.: Starting Missouri safety Marvin Burks Jr. was down on the field for a little while, and there has been an injury timeout. He left the field and went to the medical tent, but he is back out and has his helmet on now.

3:32 p.m.: Cook was forced into a throwaway and the Tigers had to punt. After pinning the Tide inside the 10, Jalen Milroe and Co. have put up back-to-back first downs.

3:28 p.m.: Missouri takes a timeout facing third-and-5 just inside the Alabama half. You get the sense that opportunities to score may be sparse today, so big moment upcoming.

3:25 p.m.: Lethargic start for the Missouri offense, but it’s an encouraging sign for the Tigers that Brady Cook appears to be moving well, even after a couple really hard hits. Defense has been up to the task so far. When the game returns, Missouri faces second-and-7 from just inside the Bama half.

3:22 p.m.: Missouri defensive end Johnny Walker Jr. sacks Jalen Milroe on third down. Another good showing from the #Mizzou defense, and the Tigers get some decent field position as Luther Burden III fair catches just inside the MU half.

3:16 p.m.: Missouri was the beneficiary of a personal foul on defensive end LT Overton, but the Tigers could only sustain the drive to midfield. Luke Bauer runs out for the third straight drive to punt, and pins Alabama at the 7.

3:08 p.m.: Missouri’s defense responds well, forcing a three-and-out. Jalen Milroe was looking Mizzou corner Nicholas DeLoach Jr.’s way a couple times, but the redshirt freshman did a good job in coverage against Ryan Williams and Kobe Prentice to force incompletions.

3:01 p.m.: Missouri goes three-and-out for the second straight drive to open the game. Encouraging: Brady Cook had to peel right on the third-down play and looked to be pretty mobile. His scramble pass went to the feet of his intended receiver, but he was moving.

2:54 p.m.: Mizzou does well to hold Alabama to a field goal after the chunk play from Kendrick Law. Graham Nicholson convert a field-goal try from 47 yards to open the scoring.

2:53 p.m.: Kendrick Law gets a chunk play on an end-around for Alabama. Tide have moved inside the Mizzou 30.

2:48 p.m.: Missouri goes three-and-out to start the game. Cook completed a couple passes, but a second-down flea-flicker attempt resulted in a pretty hefty sack. With Cook’s ankle the way we all assume it is, the Tigers could do with avoiding those today or the QB will not last long.

2:46 p.m.: Brady Cook is with the offense. QB1 will start.

2:44 p.m.: Alabama wins the toss and defers to the second half. Missouri will receive the ball to start the game. Here comes, we think, Cook and Co.

Pregame updates

2:42 p.m.: The players have run out onto Saban Field, and we have less than a couple minutes until kickoff in Tuscaloosa. The next updates you get will be from in the game.

2:11 p.m.: Returned from the stadium concourse, where I managed to get a pretty good view of Brady Cook as he moved onto the field for team warmups. He’s not the most mobile I’ve ever seen him, but it really looks as if he’s going to give this a shot. I’d be shocked if Mizzou does not start QB1. Whether it lasts … we will see.

1:45 p.m.: Update: No field access before the game for writers here in Tuscaloosa, so any and all updates will be coming from the press box. Still waiting on both teams to emerge for team warmups, as the countdown clock dips under an hour until kickoff.

1:42 p.m.: Looks like the teams are about to send out players for final warmups, so I’m going to head down to the field and see what I can see on the Mizzou end. Will be interesting to check on Cook’s mobility with the game-time decision designation.

1:21 p.m.: Missouri quarterback Brady Cook is listed as a game-time decision on the Tigers’ final availability report of the week. He was on the field and warming up not too long ago, and best guesses suggest MU will run him out to start and see how he fares.

Nate Noel and Mookie Cooper, as was already revealed, are going to miss today’s game. Everyone else that appeared on Mizzou’s report this week, however, is now listed as available, which is a positive sign for Eli Drinkwitz’s team.

12:48 p.m.: Here is the update everybody is looking for: Brady Cook walked off the team bus without a boot, and he did not have a noticeable limp. We believe Missouri is, at the very least, going to attempt to play QB1 to begin today.

12:46 p.m.: The Mizzou buses have arrived and the Tigers are in the building. Some players are currently out on Saban Field getting pre-game warmups. Alabama played a not-so-coincidental ballad to welcome the Tigers into the stadium. I’ll post video of the warm welcome below:

12:44 p.m.: Good afternoon from Bryant-Denny Stadium. It’s homecoming in Tuscaloosa for today’s game, and from a quick jaunt around the Alabama campus, it is packed and loud. Incredibly impressive environment, and I ran into a fair few black-and-gold jerseys. Good turnout for a big day from the visiting support.
