Detroit – As the Tigers play later and later in October, they also play later and later in the evening.

The winner-take-all Game 5 of the American League Division Series has been moved to prime time, with first pitch at 8:08 PM Saturday in Cleveland, because the other AL series are over.

With the New York Yankees having eliminated the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night, Major League Baseball, to appease television partner TBS, pushed back the Tigers-Guardians first pitch from its originally scheduled time of 4:38 p.m.

The Yankees and Royals were scheduled to play Game 5 at 8:08 p.m

The Tigers opened the postseason with five straight day games before playing their first night game on Thursday, losing 5-4 to the Guardians at Comerica Park as Cleveland won an elimination game for the first time since 1997.

The winner of Saturday’s game at Progressive Field will advance to face the Yankees in the AL Championship Series, which begins Monday night at Yankee Stadium in New York, with first pitch at 7:37 p.m.

The Tigers are 5-4 in winner-take-all games, including three straight wins in the AL Division Series from 2011-2013.

Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who dominated in Game 2, gets the start, while the Guardians had not yet decided who to throw out. Manager Stephen Vogt said there will be an announcement on the off-day on Friday. Former Tiger Matthew Boyd, who pitched so well in Game 2, is on regular rest and is an option, but there are other options, Vogt said Thursday evening.

“We had to get through tonight,” Vogt said. “We will meet again tomorrow.”
