Tim Walz calls new viral Dwyane Wade image ‘horrific’

Add Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to the list of critics of the Dwyane Wade statue.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate has caught a glimpse of the statue that has gone viral because it doesn’t resemble the Miami Heat legend.

According to internet memes, the statue looks like almost everyone except Wade. Walz said he saw a resemblance to Laurence Fishburne.

“How friendly was D-Wade to the sculptor about this? Because this is pretty gruesome,” Walz told Dan Le Batard. “I don’t know how they got that wrong.”

Walz called Wade a “class act” for seemingly being okay with how the image turned out.

“He’s friendly or he doesn’t care,” Walz joked.

Wade seemed to be okay with how he looks, at least publicly.

“If I wanted it to look like me, I would just stand outside the arena, and you could all take pictures,” Wade said. “It doesn’t have to look like me. It’s an artistic version of a moment that happened, that we try to enhance.”

Wade said the reveal was still a “special moment for my family and me.”

“I don’t know many people with statues, do you?” Wade added. “Anyone here, you guys know anything about the process of making a statue? No one out there, either. It’s an incredible process to be a part of. And it’s a complicated process. Sitting down with the Miami Heat and myself, we wanted to capture a moment that represented the organization, and represented myself, and represented this city. We felt like we captured that moment in artistic form.”

The statue’s pose is of Wade shouting “This is my house” during a March 2009 match against his hometown Chicago Bulls. However, Wade’s jersey in that game was an “El Heat” jersey, not a “Miami” jersey.

Oscar Leon, the artist who created the statue, said 800 hours of work went into the statue, 16 hours of which were with Wade, using photographs of Wade that were turned into a clay model with the help of a number of computers.
