Warning: This page contains spoilers for the November 25, 2024 game Danger! – please don’t scroll down if you don’t want to be spoiled. Please note that the game will air as early as 12:00 noon in some US television markets.

Here is today’s final hazard (in the category Novels from the 19th century) for Monday November 25, 2024 (Season 41, Game 56):

In this novel, the mention of a new railway line between Rothal and Allahabad in India leads to an argument and then to a bet

(correct response among participants)

Today’s danger! participants:

Carolyn Gramlinga science writer from Washington, DC
Carolyn Gramling on Danger!
Kevin Laskowskian Episcopal priest from Falls Church, Virginia
Kevin Laskowski about Danger!
Adam Hersha lawyer from Brooklyn, New York (1-day total: $29,000)
Adam Hersh on Danger!

Andy’s pregame thoughts:

Welcome to week #12 of season 41 of Dangerwhere Adam Hersh returns as one-day champion. Last Monday’s announcement of the Tournament of Champions (and to a lesser extent Champions Wildcard) field added some intrigue to today’s match. Adam’s single-day total is only $200 less than Evan Dorey’s, and if Adam doesn’t win today, it’s unknown if Adam’s total will be enough for Champions Wildcard.

Viewers should also be cautioned to check their local listings later this week as there is often significant priority on both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday thanks to several professional and college football games.

The inciting incident of the plot of Jules Verne’s novel Around the world in eighty days was a newspaper article stating that the opening of a new railway section in India would make it possible to travel around the world in 80 days. Phileas Fogg, a wealthy English gentleman and member of the Reform Club, makes a bet of £20,000 (half his fortune) that he can actually travel around the world in 80 days.

Interestingly enough, the novel was initially serialized in the fall of 1872 Le Tempswith the ending’s publication purposefully coinciding with Fogg’s December 21 book “deadline”; Furthermore, due to the contemporaneous setting, many readers actually believed that the journey took place and began placing bets on its outcome.
