Top 5 Moments From Trump-Harris Presidential Debate: ‘I’m Talking Now’

Former President Trump and Vice President Harris faced off for the first time on Tuesday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during a debate moderated by ABC News.

Technically, the event was the second presidential debate of the election, but it was the first since President Biden ended his campaign and the Democrats nominated Harris for president.

The debate touched on a variety of topics and involved plenty of shots being fired, but there were a few moments that stood out more than others. Here are the top 5 moments from the match-up.

ABC DEBATE MODERATOR ACCUSED OF ONLY FACT-CHECKING ONE CANDIDATE

1. Trump says he wanted to send Harris a MAGA hat

Trump said he would “send her a MAGA hat,” referring to Harris, as he claimed the vice president had adopted his political philosophy on the campaign trail. “Everything she believed in three years ago, four years ago, has been thrown out the window — she’s now switched to my philosophy,” he said during the debate.

Harris has notably reversed a number of policy positions she took while in the Senate and during the 2019 campaign, and she has also taken an anti-Trump stance and acted as a moderator before the election.

“But if she were ever elected, she would change it,” Trump warned. “And it will be the end of our country. She is a Marxist.”

2. Trump says he ‘probably got shot in the head’ because of Biden and Harris’ rhetoric

The former president responded to warnings from Harris that he would lead an authoritarian regime in a second term by suggesting that her and Biden’s comments may have prompted the attempted assassination of him in July.

“This is the one who used the gun. Not me. She used the gun,” Trump said in response to Harris’ claims.

“I probably got a bullet in my head because of the things they’re saying about me,” he said. Trump was shot in the ear at a July rally in Pennsylvania before the Secret Service killed the gunman and escorted him off the stage.

“They talk about democracy – I’m a threat to democracy. They’re the threat to democracy with the fake Russia Russia Russia investigation that went nowhere,” Trump added.

3. Harris says she is not Joe Biden

The vice president told moderators, “I’m clearly not Joe Biden,” after Trump criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s economic policies, saying, “She is Biden.”

“She’s trying to get away from Biden,” he said.

Harris responded that she is not Biden, adding that she is “certainly not Donald Trump.”

“What I can offer is a new generation of leaders for our country,” she said.

4. Harris continues to support government withdrawal from Afghanistan, despite criticism

“Do you think you bear any responsibility for the way the withdrawal went?” a moderator asked Harris.

“Well, I will tell you that I agreed with President Biden’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan,” she said.

“Four presidents said they would do it, and Joe Biden did it.”

During the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, 13 U.S. service members were killed in a terrorist attack. Trump also pointed out that the withdrawal left U.S. assets and equipment in the country as the disorganized departure took place.

Harris did not respond to ABC moderators’ question about whether she felt responsible for the nature of the withdrawal.

5. Trump uses Harris’ famous quote against her

Trump made a comment Tuesday night similar to one Harris famously made during the 2020 vice presidential debate.

“Hold on, I’m talking now if you don’t mind. Please,” the former president said.

Harris was seen on camera intervening after Trump said she supported defunding the police. Her response was not heard because her microphone was muted.

Trump’s quote was a reference to Harris’ own remark in 2020 to then-Vice President Mike Pence. “Mr. Vice President, I am speaking. I am speaking,” she said when Pence began to interrupt.
