Treehouse Foods, an Illinois-based manufacturer, recalls a surge in frozen waffles sold at major supermarket chains due to concerns about listeria contamination.

The company is behind dozens of frozen waffles from various store brands sold at Walmart, Target, Harris Teeter, Publix, Food Lion, Tops and more. The manufacturer also produces frozen waffles for brands such as Kodiak Cakes, Simple Truth and Foodhold.

On Friday, TreeHouse Foods said it is voluntarily recalling some of its frozen waffle products after routine testing at one of its manufacturing facilities identified possible listeria contamination. There have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the frozen waffle products to date, the company added.

The recall affects products sold in the US and Canada. The Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are aware of the recall.

Listeria is a major concern in the US this year. A series of outbreaks — largely related to deli meat — have killed 10 people in 19 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Sept. 25. recalled as a result.

Listeria infections typically cause flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache and fatigue. The bacteria can be especially serious and potentially fatal for older adults, people with weakened immune systems, newborns, and pregnant women.

The most common way to become infected is by eating food contaminated with listeria. According to the CDC, symptoms can occur as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks later. Depending on the severity of the infection, some people may recover on their own, while others may need antibiotics.

TreeHouse Foods said customers should check their freezers for products listed in the recall. Those with recalled products should throw them away or return them to the grocery store for credit.
