Tropical Storm Leslie, the next storm will be Nadine

As west-central Florida assesses the aftermath of Hurricane Milton – and the southeastern U.S. continues its recovery from Helene – the National Hurricane Center is keeping watch for the next potential storm to be named Nadine.

Forecasters had been monitoring a developing system off Florida’s east coast, but it dissipated before becoming Tropical Storm Nadine.

Now being watched: a system in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean. It is located a few hundred kilometers west of the Cape Verde Islands, which lie off the west coast of Africa and are moving westward and could develop into a tropical depression. Further development is not expected until at least the middle of next week, with the system having a 40% chance of forming in the next seven days, the NHC said.

Still, the tropics near the U.S. could be quiet for most of next week, AccuWeather forecasters say. But they predict a moderate risk for tropical development from Thursday, October 17 to Saturday, October 19 in the western Caribbean, the region where Helene and Milton formed.

A gyre, an area of rotating air currents, is expected to form over Central America next week. “From this large, slowly rotating area of low pressure, a more distinct area of showers and thunderstorms may form, and from there a tropical depression or tropical storm may develop,” AccuWeather hurricane expert Alex DaSilva said in the forecast.

Where is Tropical Storm Leslie?

Leslie was designated a tropical storm on October 2 and strengthened into Hurricane Leslie, then weakened again to a tropical storm on Thursday. On Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said Leslie – about 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores – had weakened into a trough and posed no threat to the US.

The storm is producing maximum sustained winds of nearly 50 miles per hour, with higher gusts, and is expected to gradually weaken over the coming days, the NHC said.

When does the 2024 hurricane season end?

More than seven weeks remain in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which typically runs from June 1 to November 30. There have been thirteen named storms so far this season. The next storms to form will be named Nadine and Oscar.

After about five weeks of relative calm, the 2024 season – especially with the arrival of Helene and Milton – became an above-average hurricane season, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach.

After scoring a score of 127 on the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index, a measure that includes storm frequency, intensity and duration, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is considered “officially meeting NOAA’s definition of an above-normal season.” “, Klotzbach said on X Wednesday.
