Tropical Storm Rafael strengthens into a hurricane. Is Texas in his path?

Tropical Storm Rafael is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall in Cuba on Wednesday.

Afterwards, Rafael will move to the Gulf of Mexico. Since current forecasts show the storm moving toward the northern Gulf Coast, Texas could see some impacts even without landfall.

According to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, a tropical storm watch has been issued for the lower and middle Florida Keys, from Key West to west of the Channel 5 Bridge.

Tropical storm conditions may reach the Gulf Coast on Wednesday. Rainfall of 1 to 3 inches could reach these areas in the middle to later week.

How strong is Tropical Storm Rafael and where is it headed?

At 6 a.m. CST, the center of Tropical Storm Rafael was located near latitude 17.4 north and longitude 78.4 west.

Rafael is moving towards the northwest at a speed of 21 km/h. A predominantly northwesterly movement is expected in the coming days. The storm is forecast to move near Jamaica this morning, near or over the Cayman Islands this evening, and near or over western Cuba on Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 100 km per hour, with higher gusts.

Steady to rapid intensification is forecast over the next 24 to 36 hours, and Rafael is expected to become a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean near the Cayman Islands, with further strengthening before making landfall in Cuba.

Tropical storm force winds extend as far as 110 miles (170 kilometers) from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 993 mb.

“The greatest chance of landfall is along Louisiana’s central coast,” AccuWeather said.

“However, since steering winds may change somewhat this week and weekend due to the approach of a non-tropical storm from the south-central US, there is a high probability of where landfall will occur.

Large parts of the Gulf Coast, from Texas to Florida, are also likely to experience heavy rainfall.

Texas and adjacent areas in the southeastern United States could experience Rafael in the middle to latter part of the week. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected for the Lower and Middle Florida Keys.
