Trump announces Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota as Secretary of the Interior

President-elect Trump teased a “big” announcement Thursday evening, saying North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will lead the Department of the Interior.

“It will be announced (Friday)… I look forward to making the formal announcement, although this is actually a pretty big announcement at this point,” Trump said during his speech at the Americans For Prosperity Gala at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday. “He will lead the Home Office and he will be fantastic.”

“We are going to reduce regulatory waste, fraud and inefficiency,” Trump said. “We’re going to clean up the corrupt, broken and failing bureaucracies. And we’re going to stop the sexual mutilation of children. We’re going to stop it because it’s time.”

Burgum, a former multimillionaire software company CEO turned two-term governor, launched a bid for the White House in June 2023.

Bergum made energy and natural resources a key part of his campaign for the GOP nomination.

After reaching the podium at the Republican Party’s first two presidential debates, Burgum failed to qualify for the third showdown, in the fall of last year, and dropped out of the race for the White House last December. A month later, he appeared with Trump in Iowa and endorsed the former president for the Republican nomination, days before the nation’s first caucuses.

Burgum became a high-profile surrogate for the former president, appearing on Trump’s behalf on the campaign trail and in media hits.

He was considered as Trump’s running mate last summer before Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance was selected as the Republican Party’s vice presidential nominee.

The governor added that a Trump victory also “means America will become dominant in energy.”

“America will be dominant in energy, which is key to all the diplomacy we do around the world,” he said.
