Trump continues to repeat false claims about Harris’ racial identity

Former President Donald Trump repeated his false claims about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity, including that she “happened to be black.”

When asked by moderators about previous comments, Trump said Tuesday that he “doesn’t give a damn” about Kamala Harris’ racial identity.

“I don’t care what she is. I don’t care,” Trump said Tuesday. “Whatever she wants to be, that’s fine with me.”

Trump previously falsely claimed that Harris did not identify as both Black and Indian during an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago in August.

“I didn’t know she was black until a few years ago, when she happened to be black and now she wants to be known as black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she black?” Trump said during the NABJ interview.

He added that “she had always been Indian, and then all of a sudden she turned around and became a black woman.”

Harris has always identified as Native American and black and has long embraced both cultures.

After Trump repeated his comments, Harris went on the attack, claiming that he had made comments about race throughout his career to divide the country.

“I think it’s a tragedy, frankly, that we have someone who wants to be president, but who has consistently tried throughout his career to use race to divide the American people,” she said. “I think the American people want better than that, want better than this.”
