Trump-Harris meeting at Ground Zero 9/11 Memorial captured by TV cameras

The morning after their fiery first debate, in which Vice President Kamala Harris called former President Donald Trump a liar and Trump blamed Harris for an unsubstantiated rumor that immigrants in Ohio were eating their neighbors’ dogs, the presidential candidates were near the annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan.

How close? Only President Joe Biden and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stood between them. In fact, it was Bloomberg who broke the ice. In a made-for-TV moment, the former mayor leaned in, tugged on Harris’ sleeve and pointed at Trump, who was looking expectantly in the vice president’s direction.

Just as she had at the start of the debate last night, Harris extended her hand to Trump and the two shook hands, a gesture that came as a surprise to some who had watched the confrontation the night before.

Below you can watch the moment, captured by C-SPAN cameras.

Internet sleuths suspected the words exchanged were something along the lines of Trump telling Harris, “You did a good job” and Harris saying a few short words, including reportedly, “Thank you, thank you.”

It was a surprising — though appropriate — moment of decency after a night of very indecent exchanges.
