Trump knows how to turn Democrats’ insults on their head

Former President Donald Trump has perfected the art of the troll.

In the latter part of this presidential race, a more comfortable and comical Trump has emerged, questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’ claims that he worked at McDonald’s and capitalizing on President Joe Biden’s description of Trump supporters as ” garbage’. And he does this with a sense of humor that was missing in this campaign.

Biden made the nonsense remark Tuesday night during a phone call with Voto Latino in response to a joke about Puerto Rico deemed racist by a comedian who appeared at Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden. The president has tried to walk it back and Harris has distanced himself from the insult.

But Trump saw the opportunity and responded by driving a garbage truck with “Trump” on the side onto the tarmac in Green Bay, wearing a bright orange and yellow safety vest.

It was certainly showmanship, and not the typical setting for a billionaire. But Trump is the people’s billionaire and he made it happen.

Two weeks ago, Trump visited a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, put on an apron and started handing out fries from the drive-thru window.

These are stunts. He is trolling Harris very effectively, testing her credibility in the middle class.

“One of my people came in and said, ‘Sir, you know, the word ‘garbage’ is the hottest thing right now?’” Trump said from the stage in Green Bay, still wearing the vest. “Sir, would you like to drive a garbage truck?”

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the images were entertaining – even for Trump critics. Instead of being the ruinous image of Michael Dukakis in tank and helmet, Trump seemed completely comfortable in his truck seat and vest.

The stunts reveal a relatable Trump who not only gets working Americans, but actually likes them. Harris never managed to get there.

Biden’s rude comment perfectly reflects the Democratic establishment’s views on the half of America they consider inferior to themselves. Former President Barack Obama accused these Americans of sticking to their guns and religion. Hillary Clinton called them a basket full of deplorable people. Trump puts on an apron or vest and meets them where they work.

And he really seems to be having a good time.

Sitting in a barbershop in the Bronx during a Fox News segment, Trump got comfortable, joked with the barbers and customers and prepared for a relaxed visit that seemed to have nothing to do with begging for votes .

He also seemed to be having fun with the people there. And that appeals to voters. They see a candidate who is willing to laugh at themselves and laugh with them.

That’s a connection that Trump’s opponents will never understand.

“What do you think of my garbage truck?” he asked reporters from his perch, exuding a confidence that even critics find difficult to downplay.

Trump knows how to create media attention – and convince his voters – in the most unlikely ways.
