Trump picks former Rep. Sean Duffy as next Secretary of Transportation

CNN

President-elect Donald Trump announced Monday that he has selected former Congressman Sean Duffy as the next secretary of the Department of Transportation.

Duffy served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019, representing Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District.

“Sean will use his experience and the relationships he built over many years in Congress to preserve and rebuild our nation’s infrastructure and fulfill our mission: ushering in the Golden Age of Travel, with an emphasis on safety, efficiency and innovation,” Trump said. in a statement.

The department’s new leader will have to deal with a number of aviation safety-related issues, including aircraft manufacturer Boeing’s series of quality control and production problems. There are also threats of airline union strikes and climate-focused initiatives such as electric vehicles and charging stations likely to be on his desk in the coming years.

Founded in 1966, the Department of Transportation has nearly 55,000 employees and leads the nation’s efforts in safety, sustainability and efficiency across all forms of travel and transportation.

In that role, Duffy would take over the department from Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who was appointed to lead the department in February 2021. During Trump’s first administration, Elaine Chao led the agency before resigning following the January 6, 2021 insurrection.
