Donald Trump thanked Pittsburgh Steelers fans for the “great reception” during his game day visit Sunday, amid widespread criticism of the event. The GOP nominee received mixed reviews after watching some of the Steelers take on New York Jets bee Acrisure Stadium. He had a very busy campaign day, including a staged service at McDonald’s.

A polarizing presence in the seats

The video shows former President Trump waving from his private suite as some fans booed him. One fan, wearing sunglasses, gave a two-finger salute to sing along as a “USA” chant was directed at the Orange Country Menace, as they are called. The said clip was forwarded by Trump campaign staffer Margo Martin as an example of the divided atmosphere in the stadium. Another fan tries to calm the situation by confronting the person doing the two-finger salute.

Two other fans also give him the bird

More footage and a photo from the Associated Press showed at least one more fan in the crowd flipping the bird during the Trump game. On his Truth Social website, Trump claimed to have thanked Steelers fans for the warm reception he received, although it was clear his presence was controversial. He was the guest of an unknown suite holder at the event.

Controversy surrounding visits to sporting events

Sporting events have often been a battleground for the garrulous businessman. The year before, he received a similarly mixed response to his visit to an Iowa-Iowa State game, when he received some boos and cheers from college football fans. A pro-Trump X account was called out for allegedly removing the clip that showed the amount of boos from the crowd.

The bigger picture

This latest incident brings up the issue of politics and sports, a topic that marks the polarized aspect of public opinion about Trump. The responses he receives at public rallies will determine the extent to which he is accepted by voters as he travels the campaign trail. Whether it’s cheers or boos, the aura for him and against him only increases.
