Trump talks about White Dudes for Harris, subpoenas

Former President Donald Trump attended the annual Al Smith charity dinner on Thursday, an event where politicians typically throw jokes at others but also make themselves the butt of the joke.

Vice President Kamala Harris skipped dinner to campaign in Wisconsin and instead submitted a comedy video featuring comedian Molly Shannon. During his remarks, Trump targeted Harris with jokes reminiscent of his insults against then-Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

The evening’s host was comedian Jim Gaffigan, who has spoken out against Trump in the past and plays Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz on “Saturday Night Live.”

Trump couldn’t think of a self-deprecating joke: ‘There’s nothing to say’

The dinner, named after former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith, benefits Catholic charities but is known for speakers who poke fun at themselves and their political opponents.

Trump teased that he would follow this tradition and tell a “few self-deprecating” jokes.

But he quickly quipped, “No, I have nothing…there’s nothing to say.”

“Nowadays it is a pleasure everywhere in New York without a summons for my appearance.”

Trump, after thanking the hosts, said it was a pleasure to be there.

“Nowadays, all over New York, it is a pleasure without a subpoena for my appearance,” he said, an apparent reference to his hush-money trial in New York, where he was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Trump also poked fun at Mayor Eric Adams, who was recently indicted on corruption charges. After a series of expressions of thanks and thanks to the New York elected officials in attendance, he said, “Mayor Adams, good luck with everything, they came after you.”

Trump denounces White Dudes for Harris

“There’s a group called White Dudes for Harris, have you seen this? Does anyone know…it doesn’t sound like that,” Trump said. “But I don’t worry about them, because their wives and their wives’ lovers all vote for me.”

White Dudes for Harris was one of several identity groups that hosted virtual fundraising calls in the weeks after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race. They raised over $4 million during their kickoff call.

Host Jim Gaffigan may regret this joke after the audience gasps

Gaffigan, an actor and comedian whose Catholic faith often appears in his jokes, was this year’s master of ceremonies for the dinner.

One of his jokes caused an audible gasp from the audience.

“During the first and only debate, President Trump talked about immigrants taking cats and eating them. If you’re keeping an eye on it at home, this is the second time grabbing a cat has been part of a campaign issue,” he said, panting, groaning and a few claps. “You know, I wanted to leave that out,” he said after the room fell silent.
