Many in Europe will be concerned about the viability of NATO and other transatlantic alliances. But there is also a feeling that Trump’s style will be much more familiar this time around.

British diplomats watched closely as Trump approached the White House, an outcome they said they were prepared for. They said they had confidence in what has long been called the “special relationship” between the US and Britain, despite controversy over officials from Britain’s ruling Labor Party campaigning for the Democrats.

“I look forward to working with you in the years ahead,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a message to Trump.

Many European leaders emphasized their “friendship” with Trump, whose international style is often seen as transactional. But Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who eschewed diplomatic tradition to remain in close contact with Trump throughout the campaign, was delighted.

“The Greatest Comeback in American Political History!” he wrote on X. “A much-needed victory for the world!”

It is impossible to be friends with everyone in international diplomacy, and some European leaders took a more formal tone. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized his country’s cooperation with the US “to promote prosperity and freedom”, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU and the US are “linked by a true partnership between our people’.
