Tua Tagovailoa’s shocking tackle attempt after a terrifying concussion

At least Tua Tagovailoa could laugh about it.

The Dolphins quarterback, who landed on injured reserve with another scary concussion earlier this year, avoided potential disaster Monday when he took a knee to the head while trying to tackle Rams linebacker Christian Rozeboom with his shoulder/head area during Monday’s victory 23-15. .

Tagovailoa has suffered at least four concussions in his career and discussed his future with his family earlier this year as some questioned whether he should continue playing.

“I feel good. All is well,” Tagovailoa said after helping the Dolphins improve to 3-6. “I went up to the guy who intercepted me and asked him, ‘Bro, can’t you just run out of bounds or cut back? It’s like you saw me and I saw you and it’s like you just wanted to run me over. He told me after the match: ‘There’s almost no room, you can’t go anywhere else.’ He had to do what he had to do to help his team win games. I wasn’t going to use my head to hit him.”

Tagovailoa’s career came under scrutiny earlier this year when he suffered a concussion in Week 2 against the Bills, leading some to wonder if he had played his last down.

The former Alabama star has suffered three concussions in the NFL after also suffering one with the Crimson Tide. His last concussion happened during a struggle where he led with his head.

With that information in mind, many assumed Tagovailoa would play differently in the future in an effort to minimize potential blows.

Monday’s tackle wouldn’t fall under that category, however, as the quarterback opted for contact by lowering his shoulder and head and connecting with the linebacker during the second quarter.

Tagovailoa indicated that the clip looked worse than reality.

“I didn’t feel any of that. However, that was a pretty poor form of approach,” Tagovailoa said. “That was pretty terrible.”

Like his star quarterback, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel chose to joke about the situation.

The Rams failed to capitalize on the interception as Kyren Williams fumbled the next play trailing 10-0.

“I think the best way to do that is not to throw it at the opponent,” McDaniel said.

Tagovailoa led the Dolphins to a victory despite an uneven performance Monday, turning the ball over twice while completing 20 of 28 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown.

Monday was his third game since being activated from injured reserve and he said nothing has changed in the way he approaches his job.

“I would say for myself, from the moment I came back against the Cardinals (Week 8), my confidence never dropped from the first game I played against the Jaguars (Week 1),” Tagovailoa said. “I think when you are playing, the game is too fast to think about anything else and when you start thinking about something else, it is difficult for you to concentrate on your work. Just go out and play football.”
