Tulsa Veterans Day parade honoring late U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe

The annual Tulsa Veterans Day Parade returns to downtown Tulsa on Monday.

The event, one of the largest parades in the country in honor of Veterans Day, will begin at the traditional start time of 11 a.m.

The parade, with 140 entries, will follow the same route, starting at Third Street and Boston Avenue, and winding through downtown to end at Veterans Park, Sixth Street and Peoria Avenue.

The theme of this year’s parade is ‘Freedom for All’.

This year’s parade will posthumously honor former Tulsa Mayor and U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe.

Organizers say Inhofe had agreed to ride in and lead the parade before his death in July at age 89.

Inhofe will be celebrated for his military service and his tireless work on behalf of veterans.

This year’s winners also include Joe Hanning, a retired Army colonel and Vietnam veteran, and John Hairston, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War era.

This year’s parade marks the 106th anniversary of the nation’s first Veterans Day, which was originally called Armistice Day and marked the official end of World War I.

The Tulsa Parade traces its unofficial origins to the end of the war, November 11, 1918.

The day officially begins with a free breakfast for veterans and their families at 7 a.m. at VFW Post 577. The parade will be followed by a free barbecue lunch at both the VFW and American Legion Post 1.
