‘Turn off that TV’: Chiefs rookie makes first NFL start on sister’s wedding day

Sunday was an important night for the Steele family.

While Carson, an undrafted rookie running back from UCLA and Ball State, was making his first start for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, his only sister, Kesslar, was celebrating her wedding 520 miles north at Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Greenwood, Indiana.

Steele completed the game with 17 carries for 72 yards, replacing the injured Isiah Pacheco. However, he was among the last to see his family celebrate his success at the reception after millions watched the game on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

The broadcast showed the bridal party and guests watching the Chiefs’ 22-17 victory over the Falcons on a TV wall at the reception.

Even though Steele told his sister it wasn’t necessary, according to the Kansas City Star.

“I thought, ‘If there’s too many people watching the game, turn off the TV,'” said Steele, who noted that Kesslar has long been his biggest supporter during tough times. “But she just fell for it.”

Steele was set to be a page boy until his football career unexpectedly got a boost in Kansas City.

“I was like, ‘Hey, you can’t plan weddings in September when your brother’s in the NFL,'” Steele joked, since she apparently planned the wedding while he was still in college. “But she clearly didn’t listen to me.”

Steele will have to make do with photos from the wedding for now, as he’s expected to play a major role in Kansas City’s offense.

The Chiefs (3-0) travel to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers (2-1) on Sunday.
