Tyreek Hill’s detention leads to wild Trump insinuation from former ESPN personality

Jemele Hill, former ESPN personality and current editor at The Atlantic, suggested a connection to Donald Trump following the arrest of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Sunday.

The NFL player was pulled over during a traffic stop with Miami-Dade police officers before the Dolphins played the Jacksonville Jaguars. Video footage showed Hill handcuffed on the ground in a tense moment with officers. One officer was later placed on “administrative duties.”

The columnist put forward a theory about the arrest on X.

“A reminder that Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is a huge Donald Trump supporter — the same Trump who advocates giving ALL police immunity from prosecution,” Hill wrote. “Do with that what you will.”

Ross hosted a fundraiser for Trump in 2019, which led to negative reactions against some of the companies he invested in, including Equinox and SoulCycle.

Ross also founded the RISE program, a “national nonprofit organization that educates and empowers the sports community to eliminate racial discrimination, advance social justice and improve race relations,” according to its website. He left the board in 2022 and was named a board member emeritus.

In April, Trump promised to give police officers a blanket of protection after the death of NYPD officer Jonathan Diller. Trump promised to “restore law and order” and to “safeguard” and “protect” law enforcement.

Trump was asked again for his position in July at the National Association of Black Journalists conference on the case of Sonya Massey, who was killed during an incident with police officers in Illinois.

According to Fox 32 Chicago, he said he would help someone who “made an innocent mistake.”

“If I, or a group of people, felt that someone was being unfairly persecuted for doing a good job, for example, committing a crime, or making a mistake, an innocent mistake… then I would want to help that person.

ADJUSTED BY OFFICERS TYREEK HILL ARREST ‘COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE,’ SAYS OFFICER DREW ROSENHAUS

“Sometimes you have less than a second to make a life-or-death decision, and sometimes really bad decisions are made. They’re not made from a bad standpoint, they’re made from a ‘they made a mistake’ standpoint.”

There was no evidence that Trump and Ross were involved in the arrest of Tyreek Hill.

The South Florida Police Benevolent Association defended officers involved in the incident. Police union president Steadman Stahl said Hill was pulled over for “officer safety after driving in a manner that put himself and others in grave danger.”

“Upon being apprehended, Mr. Hill did not immediately cooperate with officers on scene, and in accordance with policy and for their immediate safety, he placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs,” the statement said. “Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore led to the ground.”

Stahl said Hill had received two traffic tickets and reminded those who came into contact with police officers to “obey the lawful police chief first and file a complaint later.”

He added that “we are confident in the actions that led to Mr. Hill’s arrest, but as with any investigation, we are waiting for all the facts to emerge, along with any explanation Mr. Hill may have for his actions that caused this unfortunate incident.”

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called the incident “completely unacceptable” in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“What happened to Tyreek today in the stadium is completely unacceptable,” he said. “Tyreek did not deserve to be treated in this manner by the police involved. Tyreek’s legal team will pursue this matter on Tyreek’s behalf and I am sure they will consider legal action.”

The wide receiver insisted he had “no idea” why the officers were handcuffing him.

“I wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way,” Hill said. “I didn’t swear. I didn’t do any of that. Like I said, I’m still trying to figure it out, man.”

Hill wondered what would have happened if he hadn’t been an NFL player.

“I don’t want to bring race into it, but sometimes it gets a little questionable when you do,” he added. “What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? God knows what that guy or guys would have done. I just wanted to make sure I did what my uncle always told me when you’re in a situation like that: ‘Just listen, put your hands on the wheel and just listen.'”
