After a disputed foul in the final minute of overtime knocked two-time defending champion Connecticut from the undefeated ranks Monday night, Huskies coach Dan Hurley was still steaming after the game.

Hurley criticized the officials during his press conference after the 99-97 loss to Memphis at the Maui Invitational, calling the offensive foul on Huskies forward Liam McNeely “a complete joke.”

Hurley was also assessed a technical foul for protesting the call, which came with 40 seconds left and the score tied at 92. The Tigers’ PJ Carter hit all four free throws to give Memphis the lead he wouldn’t give up anymore, ending UConn’s 17. game win streak dating back to last season.

“That was a joke. I just looked at it,” Hurley said. “There was a player in Memphis who made a half attempt to rebound that basketball and Liam McNeeley highlighted that rebound. Because that decision at that point in the game was a complete joke.”

Hurley suffered a technical failure after falling to his knees on the track in protest.

“I don’t know what happened. Maybe I lost my balance because of the absurdity of the call, or maybe I tripped,” Hurley said. “But if I had made that call at that moment, I would have ignored the fact that I was on my back… What you can call that while that match was going on, the way that match was going, is beyond me. “

The loss in the first round of the eight-team holiday tournament was UConn’s first since Feb. 20, when the Huskies fell to Creighton. They advanced to the Big East and NCAA tournaments last season and repeated as NCAA champions.
