A yellow weather warning has been issued for large parts of the United Kingdom this weekend for heavy rainfall, with flooding and disruption threatening.

The Met Office warning is in effect from 9pm on Saturday evening until 6pm on Sunday evening and covers most of southern England and Wales, from Sheffield to Immingham in Lincolnshire and Tenby in Pembrokeshire.

The new band of “heavy and thundery showers” will reach the south coast on Saturday and move north overnight, the Met Office said.

In some places up to 100mm of rain could fall and there is a risk of power outages and flooding, which could cause some communities to be off the road and driving conditions to be difficult.

This follows earlier heavy rainfall that hit southern England and Wales on Thursday and Friday.

The Met Office said: “While there is still some uncertainty over the exact details, areas of heavy, sometimes thundery showers are expected to move north and then west across England and Wales this evening and overnight.

“During the day on Sunday, these areas of heavy rainfall may persist for longer in western areas, while further east, slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop.”

It added: “Rainfall amounts will vary significantly across the warning area, with some locations seeing less than 10mm of rain, while others will see 40-60mm.

“There is a smaller chance that a few places within the warning area could see 80-100mm of rain by late Sunday, which could happen in a fairly short space of time.

“These higher numbers are slightly more likely in the southern half of the warning area.

“Given that a lot of rain has also fallen in this region since Thursday, the chance of consequences is greater than you would normally expect for this time of year.”

Elsewhere in the north, sunny and dry periods are still expected, but it will become cloudier and milder.

According to meteorologists, cooler and fresher temperatures are expected across the country until next week, while the outlook is generally unsettled.
