Unbridled scoring spree in Barcelona fueled by ‘love of the game’

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick wants his team to continue their rampant scoring run after beating Red Star Belgrade 5-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday, extending their winning run to seven games in all competitions.

Barça have scored at least three times in each of those seven wins – including four against both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid – and have scored three or more goals in ten of their sixteen games this season.

They have already scored 55 goals in LaLiga and the Champions League, an average of more than 3.4 per match, and Flick says the players’ love of competition drives them.

“The performance is really good,” Flick said at his post-match press conference. “I really enjoy the team and I think the results, they speak their own language.

“What we do, really focused in every game, you can see that. (The players) are doing well with the game plan we have. They realize it on the field and that’s good to see.”

“I hope (we can hold it) – we definitely have the confidence. Not just because of this match, but because of the entire season we have played (until) now.

“The team is doing great because they love to play football and they like to compete against any team. The best of the best, they like to compete against any team. We want to compete (in this format) for a while and we are working on it there it’s hard for.”

It is the first time since the 2011/2012 season that Barça have scored three or more goals in three consecutive Champions League games, while the last time they scored three or more in seven consecutive games in all competitions was in 2017.

The majority of the team’s goals came from Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, with the duo both on target in the victory in Belgrade, Barca’s third win in four European games this season.

Lewandowski scored twice after Silas canceled out Iñigo Martínez’s opener, with Raphinha and Fermín López finishing off the match before Milson got a late consolation for the home side.

The goals were Lewandowski’s 18th and 19th of the season and his 98th and 99th in the Champions League. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and Lionel Messi (129) scored more.

“If I knew before, maybe I won’t change him,” Flick joked when asked about taking Lewandowski off the pitch in the second half as the Polish forward approached his 100th goal in the competition.

“But we also have to think about the next match against Real Sociedad in LaLiga on Sunday. Today he scored two very important goals. Especially the first goal, making it 2-1, was very important for us.”

Defender Jules Koundé also shone in the victory, providing assists for three of the right back’s five goals.

“He is a good example for the whole team,” Flick said of the France international. “We have a lot of players who have improved a lot this season, they are improving their performances and Jules is an absolute professional player.

“He is very focused on the field and training. I appreciate that. The fact that he also gave the final pass on the goals today is very nice to see.”

The three points, which took Barça into the top eight of the new Champions League standings, were somewhat tarnished by a nasty-looking cut to the face of centre-back Pau Cubarsí in the second half.

However, Flick played down the incident and suggested the 17-year-old would be fit to cope LaReal on weekends.

“Pau has a cut, but he is doing well,” Flick said. ‘He’s doing well. Needs some stitches, but he’s fine. He’s smiling, so it’s okay.’
