As the 2024 college football season continues into October, we’re following all the teams still in contention for a perfect season.

Heading into Week 8, only 11 FBS teams remain undefeated. The Big Ten leads the way with three undefeated teams; the SEC lost three of its four undefeated teams in the chaos of Week 6.

Teams are listed according to their rankings in the final AP Top 25 poll, and then in alphabetical order.

No. 1Texas

File: 6-0 (2-0 SEC)
Last game: Defeated Oklahoma, 34-3
Last undefeated season: 2005 (13-0, won BCS National Championship Game)

The Longhorns remain the only undefeated team in the SEC after their convincing victory over then No. 18 Oklahoma in Week 7. However, Steve Sarkisian’s squad will face its toughest challenge of the season next week as No. 5 Georgia visits Austin travels to try to add a loss to the Longhorns’ resume.

No. 3 Oregon

File: 6-0 (3-0 Big Ten)
Last game: Defeated Ohio State, 32-31
Last undefeated season: 1916 (7-0-1, won Rose Bowl)

The Ducks are rolling after beating Ohio State Saturday night in Eugene. Dan Lanning secured Oregon’s first-ever win over a top-2 opponent, and the Ducks are now the team to beat in the Big Ten. The Ducks will look to keep the ball rolling against a struggling Purdue team next week. Looking ahead, Oregon only has two ranked matchups left on the schedule: at home against Illinois and on the road against Michigan. It’s no guarantee, but the Ducks have passed their biggest test in search of a perfect season.

No. 4 Penn State

Last game: Defeated Southern Cal, 33-30 (OT)
Last undefeated season: 1994 (12-0, won Rose Bowl)

James Franklin’s side showed resilience in Week 7, storming back from a 20-6 halftime deficit to beat Southern California 33-30 in overtime. The Nittany Lions get a bye week to prepare for Wisconsin in Week 9 and Ohio State the week after.

No. 6 Miami (Fla.)

The Canes got a much-needed bye week after two close wins over Virginia Tech in Week 5 and California in Week 6. Cam Ward has put together a fantastic season for Mario Cristobal’s squad, and Miami remains one of two ACC teams to enter the week undefeated enter. 8.

No. 11 State of Iowa

File: 6-0 (3-0 Big 12)
Last game: Defeated West Virginia, 28-16
Last undefeated season: N/A

This may not be the team you would expect here, but Iowa State is playing good football. The Cyclones are ranked this season for the first time since 2021, coming off a convincing win against West Virginia. Matt Campbell’s team secured its first 6-0 start since 1938 in Week 7, and the Cyclones will look perfect at home against UCF next weekend.

No. 14 BYU

File: 6-0 (3-0 Big 12)
Last game: Defeated Arizona, 41-19
Last undefeated season: 1984 (13-0, won national championship)

After a tough first season in the Big 12, the Cougars have already surpassed their 2023 conference win total. They have two wins to their name at Kansas State and SMU, and Kalani Sitake’s squad easily defeated Arizona in Week 7. will look to carry this momentum into their Week 8 matchup with Oklahoma State.

T no. 18 Indiana

While Indiana hasn’t had the toughest competition thus far, the Hoosiers are still 6-0 for the first time since 1967. First-year head coach Curt Cignetti and senior quarterback Kurtis Rourke have found something in Bloomington. The Hoosiers will have a bye week to prepare for their toughest test of the season against Nebraska on Oct. 19. No one knows how long this run will last, but Cignetti has already secured bowl qualification for the Hoosiers, who have only been there five times. since 1993.

No. 22 Pittsburg

Last game: Defeated California, 17-15
Last undefeated season: 1976 (12-0, won national championship)

The Panthers are coming off a disappointing 3-9 season in 2023, but transfershirt freshman Eli Holstein has lit the fire in this Pitt team. He threw for more than 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in five games, earning narrow wins against Cincinnati, West Virginia and now California in Week 7. Pitt picked up a two-point win against a tough Cal team, and the Panthers get a bye a week early. take Syracuse in two weeks.

Army

The Black Knights are averaging over 38 points per game while allowing fewer than 10. And believe it or not, Army has the longest winning streak in FBS football at ten. Based on the first six games, Army should cruise until Nov. 23 against Notre Dame. The Irish have proven to be beatable, and if the Black Knights succeed, we could be talking about Army in the 12-team playoffs at the end of November.

Freedom

File: 5-0 (3-0 CUSA)
Last game: Defeated Florida International, 31-24 (OT)
Last undefeated season: N/A

Things haven’t been smooth sailing for the Flames, but they are 5-0 for the second straight season. They are coming off an overtime win against FIU on Tuesday, but without a classification game on the schedule, Liberty could be looking at another undefeated season.

Navy

File: 5-0 (3-0 American)
Last game: Defeated Air Force, 34-7
Last undefeated season: 1926 (9-0-1)

This list ends with the Midshipmen. The Navy has already reached its victory point as of 2023, and like the Army, the midshipmen have yet to be truly challenged. Also similar to Army, it appears Navy could sail to the Oct. 26 game with Notre Dame. The Midshipmen meet the Irish a month earlier than the Black Knights, and it will be a great test to see how legitimate Navy’s roster really is this season.
