United Airlines is plotting an international expansion in 2025 that will stretch from Senegal to Mongolia and Greenland to Palau, an effort to win over travelers who have already had enough of the well-trodden streets of Paris, Rome and Tokyo.

Beginning May 21, United will fly three times a week between its hub in Newark, New Jersey, to Palermo, Sicily; on May 16, it will launch non-stops to Faro in Portugal’s Algarve region four days a week; on June 7, it plans a service to the Portuguese island of Madeira three days a week; and on May 31 it will launch non-stop flights to Bilbao in northern Spain, destinations that will strengthen existing services to Italy, Spain and Portugal.

The first flight between Newark and Nuuk, Greenland, will begin on June 14, United said Thursday.

“The savvy traveler has been to Paris, Rome and Madrid so many times that they are looking for something different,” Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, told reporters.

Experimenting with routes makes United a standout among U.S. and global airlines that have largely stuck to bread-and-butter additions. The expansion is part of United’s strategy to “skate where the puck goes,” Quayle said, as the company wants to ensure it’s accessible to all travelers, offering destinations from U.S. cities like Corpus Christi, Texas, to Cape Town. , South Africa.

United plans to launch daily, nonstop service to Dakar, Senegal, from Washington Dulles International Airport on May 23. Service from Tokyo’s Narita Airport to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, will begin on May 1. United has and will increase service from Tokyo. from there offer non-stop flights to Koror, Palau all year round.

Not all destinations work. United had canceled a nonstop flight to Bergen, Norway, in 2023 due to a lack of demand, but Quayle said the airline has leeway to continue expanding to long-haul destinations and that a diverse network can help drive signups for lucrative rewards . credit cards.

“The more unique content, the more we differentiate ourselves from our competitors and the more people will spend on United,” said Quayle.

United originally planned to launch service to Faro, Portugal, this year but was forced to postpone due to a safety review from the Federal Aviation Administration, which ended the service earlier this month without identifying any “significant safety concerns.”

United also plans to expand flying from the West Coast, but did not announce details Thursday.
