Unraveling the surprising ending of ‘The Perfect Couple’

Warning: Spoilers follow for The perfect couple

As one of the greatest thinkers of our time once said, Heartbreak feels good in a place like this.

The place in question here is the lush and prosperous Nantucket in The Perfect couplethe latest Nicole Kidman “rich lady on a beach” glossy miniseries just hit Netflix. But as every “eat the rich” story of the past few years has taught us—from The White Lotus Unpleasant Salt fire—the gilded veneer of the super-rich is often just one tragedy away from crumbling.

Susanne Bier’s series places us in the sprawling summer home of the Winburys, a wealthy family led by the icy matriarch Greer (Kidman) and the reserved husband Tag (Liev Schreiber), on the eve of their son Benji’s (Billy Howle) wedding to Amelia (Eve Hewson). But their lavish nuptials are postponed when, hours before the ceremony, someone is found dead in the water. Suddenly, everyone on the extensive guest list is a suspect. Big “we have The White Lotus “home” energy – it even shares a cast member in Meghann Fahy.

With only six episodes, The Perfect couple doesn’t take long to throw us into the scandalous debauchery of the mega-charged and the lengths they would go to keep their business behind their automatic estate gates. Let’s go through the twists and turns.

What happened?

A good murder mystery needs, well, a murder. Or at least a very suspicious death that raises enough suspicion to point the finger.

Sorry for those still thinking about Fahy’s incredible bait-and-switch power play in Season 2 of The White LotusIn The Perfect coupleShe doesn’t get off so unscathed. She plays the perfectly named Merritt Monaco, a low-level Instagram influencer and Amelia’s Maid of Honour.

At the end of the first episode, we discover that the mysterious body floating in the shallows outside the Winburys’ windows is Merritt, still in her slinky dress from the rehearsal dinner the night before. Was it an accidental drowning? Or did someone murder her in the dark? She had barbiturates in her system, so it looks like the latter.

We soon learn that Merritt had a big secret: not only was she having an affair with Tag, she was also pregnant with his baby.

Who are the suspects?

When someone dies in the circle of the super rich, it is reasonable to assume that the motive has to do with power, sex or money. With that in mind, there are a few immediate suspects.

First, there’s Kidman’s Greer, who moonlights in her successful career as an author by making sure her husband’s skeletons never become public. She knows that Tag has been repeatedly unfaithful, and she hints at a history of cleaning up his messes. Of course, Tag seems pretty credible, too, since Merritt is no longer just a fling he can hide with a nondisclosure agreement.

There’s Benji and Amelia, the not-so-soon-to-be husband and wife. Merritt could be a threat to Amelia’s already strained relationship with Greer, who thinks she’s a gold digger.

Best man Shooter (Ishaan Khattar) is also high on the police’s list, as there seems to be something suspicious between him and Greer. The fact that he also immediately tries to flee the island doesn’t help.

Then there are the other Winbury kids. Oldest brother and certified douchebag Tom (Jack Reynor) is married to Abby (Dakota Fanning), who is pregnant but is having an affair with his mother’s best friend Isabel (Isabelle Adjani), who also slept with his father (rich people, right?). He’s in deep debt and struggling to keep up with Abby’s high-society demands.

And finally, there’s the youngest teenage brother, Will (Sam Nivola). He’s in a budding relationship with the police chief’s daughter, and when he discovers his father’s affair with Merritt the night before the wedding, he has a drunken breakdown.

Who did it?

If The Perfect couple ends, we’re thrown a ton of information, and honestly, a lot of it doesn’t go anywhere. It turns out Greer was a high-class escort that Tag hired and fell in love with. She also has a gangster brother who shows up in the penultimate episode for no real reason other than to explain some of her questionable financial choices (Greer helps her brother cover his recurring gambling debts).

Amelia also starts seeing Shooter, Benji finds out, they fight, they make up, and then they officially break up. But some things fall into place, and once they do, the identity of the killer becomes clearer.

Before the Winbury boys can access their bloated trust fund, they must wait until the youngest child turns 18. Will is just weeks away from the big day, but with a surprise bun in Merritt’s oven, that trust fund appears to be sealed for another 18 years.

We already know that Tom is in huge debt (he has already asked his father for a big loan and borrowed over $2 million from his Isabel). He seems quite suspicious to the police, but he is just a distraction. The real killer is his wife, Abby.

Little easter eggs throughout the series have hinted that Abby killed Merritt. The Winburys’ maid, Gosha (Irina Dubova), expresses her distaste for anyone cleaning up after themselves, as that’s her job after Abby hastily washes a glass. Later, Abby jokes to Amelia that she’ll never get arrested for being a pregnant white woman. She’s been pretty duplicitous throughout the series, sowing seeds of discord between Amelia and Greer and showing little to no regard for anything other than getting an exclusive New York City apartment.

The inexplicable animal fat (tallow) found on Merritt’s body turns out to be some shady Korean skin care product that Abby smuggled into the States. When it’s clear that Tom is just an arrogant clown, Abby steps in as the one pulling the strings and the police jump on her.

Abby reveals that she has put barbiturates that Tom stole from Amelia’s dying mother in a glass of juice that she gives Merritt as they sit on the beach the night before the wedding. When she suggests they go swimming, Merritt starts to walk but immediately sinks into the water, where Abby holds her head down until she dies.

We learn that Abby knew about the trust fund issue and couldn’t wait for Tom to handle it, so she did it herself. She didn’t want Merritt and her baby stealing what she saw as her money. She’s arrested and led away in handcuffs, forced to swallow her own words about her beautiful white safety net.

It’s not exactly a shocking ending. By the end of The Perfect couplethe mystery at hand feels like it’s beside the point. The killer was always going to be one of the family members, but they’re each so terrible in their own way that it seems plausible that someone had a reason to be the killer. But if there’s one thing we can learn from The Perfect coupleit’s that Nicole Kidman has never met a coastal breeze she didn’t love, rustling through her beautifully manicured blowout as she gazes pensively out to the horizon. May we have a vehicle for that every year for the rest of time.
