Up to 10 extra centimeters possible in Denver from Friday

DENVER — Denver’s snow totals are set to pile up even further as another round of early-season accumulations are forecast Friday through Saturday morning across the metro, where forecasters said another 10 inches of snow is possible.

“We will get a break between these rounds of snow while the next round starts tonight and tomorrow,” said Denver7 meteorologist Lisa Hidalgo. “It looks like snow will increase in intensity all day Friday – bringing about 10 inches to Denver and up to a foot, if not more, west of the metro to the ski areas that open early for the season.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Boulder, a winter storm watch will be in effect for Denver metro communities Thursday evening through at least Saturday morning due to “heavy, wet snow.”

Of particular concern are the commuters navigating the roads on Friday evenings.

“Snow and ice covered roads will make travel dangerous, with the possibility of very difficult or impossible travel. Traveling can be very difficult,” the NWS wrote.

Most of the core Denver area is part of the winter storm watch that extends to Boulder and along the I-25 corridor south toward Castle Rock.

“Several snow showers will continue to impact the area through Saturday morning. The greatest impacts can be expected across the Palmer Divide through the Limon and I-70 Corridor of the Eastern Plains throughout this period, with difficult if not impossible travel conditions,” NWS forecasters wrote.
Winter storm warnings are also in effect for Colorado Springs and much of the state further south and through the Eastern Plains, including I-70.

As of Thursday morning, northern Colorado, including Fort Collins, Greeley and Fort Morgan, was not under a winter weather warning. These multiple rounds of snow this week will likely push Denver above its normal snow totals for the entire month, which is 7.3 inches in November.

COLORADO WINTER WEATHER TIMELINE

“Skies over the Denver metro area will gradually clear this afternoon, with only a few lingering showers,” Hidalgo said.

Denver7 futurecast models show around 2 p.m. Thursday that a few more flurries will remain before subsiding in the early evening hours. Snow is expected to pick up again in Denver late Thursday evening, around 10 to 11 p.m.

“We will see snow increase in intensity throughout the day on Friday,” Hidalgo said. “For the high school football games, expect temperatures in the upper 30s at 5 p.m. as high temperatures drop to close to freezing around 9 p.m. as snow continues.”

Denver7 will keep track of any school closures for Friday, which you can view at any time at this link.

While light snow returns Friday morning for the metro, moderate snowfall will occur for commuters in the evening, with the heaviest snow expected along I-25 and higher elevation roads, especially along the Palmer Divide and the southern foothills, the NWS added.

The snow will disappear on Saturday morning and a clearing will arise.

For the mountains, Saturday offers a chance of snow early in the day before skies start to clear as high temperatures remain in the 20s. Hidalgo said to expect more sunshine on Sunday with high temperatures in the 30s.

WEEKEND FORECAST DENVER

After the morning snow showers dissipate, Saturday’s high temperature in Denver will reach the low 40s before improving weather arrives on Sunday, where mostly sunny skies and a high of 52 degrees will help melt the snow.

Monday’s weather forecast in Denver will bring a return to mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid-50s. On Tuesday, Denver can expect a chance of rain, but a high temperature around 54 degrees.
