Mauricio Pochettino’s 2-0 debut win as USMNT manager over Panama on Saturday boosted confidence that the Americans were already charting a better path after the lackluster end to the Gregg Berhalter era.

Tuesday’s match against Mexico, at least for 45 minutes, was a very different story. The USMNT looked overwhelmed and trailed 1-0 at halftime after Raúl Jiménez’s fantastic free kick.

The Americans failed to make a single shot in the first half, while Mexico had twelve (three on target). The Mexicans had 58.9 percent possession and had five corners, compared to just two for the United States.

Yes, the Americans were without key figures in Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Ricardo Pepi. And yes, the game was played in Mexico. But that didn’t make the first 45 minutes any easier for fans and experts alike:

The #USMNT were actually decent the first 15 minutes. But after the goal, Mexico kept them on their heels for the rest of the half.

Mexico is the better team.
More of a sense of urgency. Physically imposing. Take more chances in the future, don’t be afraid.
#USMNT lacking pace and idea in midfield. I can’t remember the last time this happened to them.
More than a few pedestrian appearances for the US.

That was not an inspiring first half of the #USMNT. It will be interesting to see how Pochettino adjusts/changes things in the second half. Something is needed.

Jeff Carlisle @JeffreyCarlisle

Midfield non-existent for the #usmnt. Aaronson has to go. At some point he had to realize that the mistakes he expected will not be given.

The break didn’t provide much respite as Mexico quickly took a 2-0 lead after a counter and USMNT turnover in the penalty area, with César Huerta burying a shot into the bottom corner.

The Americans have generally gained the upper hand over Mexico in this rivalry lately. But after about 50 minutes, Mexico seemed to be on a different planet from their northern neighbors and rivals, much to the chagrin of the optimistic American fanbase following Poch’s appointment.
