Vanderbilt beats Virginia Tech in OT, breaks 10-game losing streak

Diego Pavia threw for two touchdowns and ran for one in Vanderbilt’s 34-27 overtime win over Virginia Tech on Saturday, snapping a 10-game losing streak.

Pavia, a transfer from New Mexico State, ran four yards for a touchdown for the go-ahead touchdown on the first possession of the extra period. The Commodores’ defense then held the Hokies to fourth-and-11 from the 12 to end the game.

Vanderbilt (1-0) actually led 17-0 early and 20-10 midway through the third before Virginia Tech (0-1) scored 17 straight points to take a 27-20 lead with 4:21 left in regulation. Pavia then drove the Commodores 70 yards in six plays to tie with an 8-yard option shovel pass to Sedrick Alexander with 1:51 left in regulation.

The Commodores — a two-touchdown underdog — had a chance to win in regulation, but Brock Taylor’s 43-yard field goal went wide as time expired. Vandy had no trouble in overtime, however, as Pavia completed three straight passes to get the ball to the 4 before driving it in for the touchdown.

Pavia completed 12 of 16 passes for 190 yards and two scores, including a 14-yarder to Quincy Skinner in the first quarter. He rushed for 104 yards on 26 carries, with Alexander adding 69 yards and a 7-yard touchdown.

Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns, but was injured on the Hokies’ final play. Kent State transfer Collin Schlee played quarterback in overtime, running for 14 yards for a first down on his first play before being sacked on the ensuing third down and throwing an incomplete on fourth.

Vanderbilt went 2-10 last season, last beating Alabama 47-13 on Sept. 2, 2023. The Commodores host Alcorn State next Saturday.
