Verizon internet outage: Fios down for millions of people

Millions of people on the East Coast experienced internet outages in the early hours of Tuesday morning on Verizon Fios.

The affected area, based on a map of user-reported issues on Downdetector, covers approximately 300 miles from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Richmond, Virginia.

A Verizon spokesperson told Newsweek in an emailed statement at 7 a.m. EST: “A network issue early this morning disrupted service for some Verizon Fios customers in the Northeast for a brief period. As soon as the issue was identified, our engineering teams restored the service quickly.”

Reports of the outages peaked between midnight and 2 a.m. ET, with the network receiving thousands of complaints during this time, according to Downdetector, a third-party website that tracks real-time service outages.

Ninety percent of these complaints related to internet services, 9 percent were described as ‘total blackouts’, while 1 percent related to TV streaming.

Newsweek contacted Verizon outside regular business hours on Tuesday for more information via email.

Another online tracker, Outage.Report, also reported receiving outrage reports about Verizon Fios in about 26 cities.

In addition to Verizon, other major internet providers such as AT&T, Cox and Xfinity also registered a spike in the number of reported outages, according to Downdetector.

Commenters on the site noted that their internet had been down for hours and criticized Verizon for not addressing the problem as of 3 a.m. ET.

“The @Verizon FiOS network has been offline for almost two hours and neither they nor @VerizonSupport have posted anything,” one user wrote.

“So. Huge widespread internet outage at Fios with no confirmation from Verizon. It’s been over an hour. They don’t seem to acknowledge anyone. It’s mainly the East Coast/DMV area. It’s a bit concerning,” another person said .
