An SUV stolen in New Hampshire led police on a high-speed chase through Massachusetts Monday morning before the driver ultimately surrendered.

The black Mercedes drove on highways at a speed of more than 150 km per hour, the speed being so high that police delayed pursuing the vehicle for a long time to avoid escalating the situation.

At one point, the SUV sped past a gas station where a couple actually watched the whole thing happen via a livestream from our news helicopter, Sky Ranger.

“We were getting gas. I thought, ‘Honey, they’re coming right by us,’ and literally in that split second he drove right by,” Briana Weir said.

Gas station surveillance footage showed more than a half-dozen Massachusetts State Police cruisers driving behind the SUV. Another bystander said he thought the SUV was traveling at least 110 mph.

Massachusetts State Police said they spotted the Mercedes, which had been reported stolen by police in Derry, New Hampshire, while driving south on Interstate 93 in Methuen shortly before 10 a.m. They began pursuing the vehicle and continued the pursuit onto Interstate 495 south and Route 2.

Sky Ranger located the vehicle on Interstate 190 south in Sterling.

At one point, the SUV was seen pulling off the highway and driving through the median.

State police said the chase continued at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, eventually deciding to end the chase for safety reasons and instead use Mercedes’ on-board GPS to track the vehicle.

The State Police Air Wing was present during the pursuit and police at one point used stop sticks in an attempt to end the chase.

Around 11:18 a.m., it appeared the SUV stopped; it was surrounded by police. State police said the vehicle was located in West Boylston.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Andrew McInnes, of Methuen, was taken into custody without incident. It is not yet clear what charges he will face.

Derry police said they first became involved when they received a call around 7:24 a.m. Monday for a report of a past burglary at Steven’s Auto Service on West Broadway. Their investigation revealed that entry had been gained through a broken window on a door, allowing access to the lock. The perpetrator is believed to have stolen cash and keys from a Mercedes that was parked on the property and went missing.

Around 9:15 a.m., Derry police said they received a report that the stolen vehicle had been spotted on South Main Street. Responding officers located the Mercedes and it immediately drove north on South Main Street. Officers followed the car briefly and observed it driving recklessly as it approached a school zone.

For safety reasons, the police then stopped the pursuit. The Mercedes was last seen traveling eastbound on Route 102 and an alert was sent to all New Hampshire law enforcement agencies.

Shortly after 11:15 a.m., Derry police said they were notified by Massachusetts State Police that they had stopped the Mercedes after a lengthy chase in their state, and a man was taken into custody. Police are still working to determine whether this man was responsible for the crimes in Derry, and what, if any, charges might be appropriate.
