The long-awaited Election Day has arrived and millions of Americans will cast their votes during the final day of voting. Although polls in Texas close at 7:00 PM CST, we likely won’t know who won the presidential race for a few days.

When will we know who won the 2024 elections?

A large number of mail-in ballots, varying states’ counting procedures and close races in key battleground states could extend the time it takes to determine final results.

In extremely close races, recounts and legal challenges can further delay the final outcome. Many states, including Texas, allow recounts if the margin between candidates falls within a certain threshold, and legal challenges are also possible, especially in high-stakes contests. These challenges may involve disputed ballots, procedural issues, or allegations of miscounting.

In the 2000 presidential election between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush, it took 35 days for a winner to be declared – the longest wait in modern history. In contrast, current President Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential race in just four days.

How many electoral votes does Texas have?

The winner of the 2024 presidential race needs 270 of the 538 electoral votes. Texas claims one of the highest numbers of electoral votes 40second only to California (which has 54 electoral votes).

What are the swing states?

There are seven swing states, also called battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

According to The History Channel, the recognizable logos come from the work of political cartoonist Thomas Nast in the 19th century.

What should I bring to vote?

According to VoteTexas.Gov, these are acceptable forms of ID to vote in the general election:

  • Texel driver’s license
  • Certificate of ID for Texas Elections
  • Texas personal identification card
  • Texas Pistol License
  • Certificate of US Citizenship with photo
  • US military ID card
  • American passport

Those who are unable to produce one of the above-mentioned forms of identification can complete a declaration of reasonable impediment at the ballot box and present an alternative form of identification. This could be a utility bill, a bank statement, a check from the government or a voter registration certificate.

When do the polling stations open and close today?

The polling stations are open from On election day from 7am to 7pm. As long as you are in line at 7pm, your vote will count no matter what time you cast it.

By law, you have the right to wait in line for as long as it takes before you can cast your vote.

Where to Vote in Texas

About 100 of Texas’ 254 counties participate in the Countywide Polling Place Program, meaning registered voters can vote at any location in their county of residence.

If your province does not participate in the program, you can only vote at your district’s polling station.

You can find the location of your polling place through the Texas Secretary of State’s “My Voter Portal.”
