Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett announces his retirement

Virginia men’s basketball coach Tony Bennett will retire effective immediately, the school announced Thursday.

Bennett, 55, went 433-169 in his 18-year career and 364-136 in 15 seasons with the Cavaliers. He will address the public at a press conference on Friday morning.

During his time at Virginia, Bennett led the Cavaliers to their first national championship in 2019 after a school-record 35 wins. Virginia won six ACC regular season titles and two ACC conference tournament championships. The Cavaliers made 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament under Bennett’s tutelage, and he earned ACC Coach of the Year honors four times.

Bennett’s teams were known for their defensive prowess: his teams ranked in the top five in the country in scoring defense 11 times. Virginia led the nation in scoring defense six times under Bennett.
