‘What a shame’: Trump blasts McConnell’s confirmation as Republican Senate leadership race looms

Former President Trump taunted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., at a rally in Kinston, North Carolina, on Sunday, calling him a “disgrace” despite securing his support for the presidency in 2024.

“Hopefully we get rid of Mitch McConnell soon, because he helped them, that guy,” he said, claiming that Kentucky Republican President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ administration have stood by.

McConnell, the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, notably announced in February that he would not reclaim the role of leader after the 2024 elections.

“Can you believe he supported me?” Trump asked the crowd on Sunday. “Boy, that must have been a painful day in his life.”

When it became clear in March that Trump would win the Republican nomination for president, McConnell supported him. “It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the necessary support from Republican voters to be our nominee for president of the United States,” he said in a statement at the time.

The approval came as a surprise to some, given the controversial relationship between the two men. But McConnell emphasized that this should not be considered unusual at all. “It should come as no surprise that as a nominee he will have my support,” he said.

Commenting on McConnell’s endorsement in early 2024, Trump said Sunday, “Every time I think about it, he didn’t have to do that.”

McConnell’s office did not provide comment to Fox News Digital in time for publication.

The former president’s mocking of both McConnell and his support comes after the minority leader’s own thoughts about him over the years were revealed in a new book.
