What does the travel weather look like before and after Thanksgiving?

Q: What’s the best day to travel – on the road or in the air?

A: You know it will be busy there, but Wednesday is the best day to travel weather-wise. There will be some snow in the Rockies and a storm system is developing. In addition, concerns about the weather on Wednesday will be kept to a minimum.

Q: What’s the worst day to travel?

A: Don’t shoot the messenger, but Thanksgiving Day will see the worst weather of the week. This is especially the case in the eastern US

Yes, that also applies to our region. The aforementioned system will bring a healthy dose of rain from the Tennessee River Valley to the east.

Q: I travel on I-40 and I-95. What can I expect on my route?

A: We don’t expect many weather issues on Tuesday. That said, there will be a brief period of rain along I-95 from late morning to early afternoon.

This is also the case if you go east via I-40.

The worst weather will be westward on Wednesday. Keep that in mind as you head into Tennessee via I-40.

Weather along I-95 should not be a major problem on Wednesday.

Question: What consequences does this have for our local?

A: It will be wet at times on Thanksgiving Day, although the heaviest/most widespread rain will fall in the afternoon and evening. Hopefully you’ll be where you need to be by Thanksgiving. If not, take it easy. We don’t expect flooding, but aquaplaning could become a problem.

Q: I hear about the possibility of snow. Where will that be?

A: We won’t see any snow locally. Surprise, surprise!

However, the further north you go, the greater the chance.

Here’s a look at the chance of 1, 3 and 6 inches of snow in some major northern cities through Friday.

Q: What can we expect when we get home after Thanksgiving?

A: If you plan to fly back to North Carolina on Friday or Saturday, expect some turbulence. Especially if you fly back from the north.

Winds will wrap around our Thanksgiving storm system. While it’s nothing extreme, the flight can be a little bumpy at times.
