RIAN WALTERS

About the violation that was closed:

“Especially early on, we had self-inflicted wounds on early downs, like negative yardage on early downs. I thought we could move the ball, especially on the ground. But we have a false start or misread it, where we keep it instead of giving it and you are playing with a negative benchmark. Now you’ve got third and long and those are hard to get, especially against a talented team.

About Ryan Browne:

“There were mistakes early on. I thought he played hard. Thought he executed the attack well. But did he play perfectly? No. Absolutely not. Some of the plays he made a week ago, we just couldn’t make those kinds of plays because of the type of opponent we were playing with. But he will grow. Obviously, he’s a redshirt freshman in his second start. Obviously disappointed with the atmosphere, the game and everything that was available from an opportunity point of view. I thought our fans showed up and showed up. It was a beautiful evening and a beautiful stage to do something special and I’m just disappointed that we couldn’t achieve that.”

On the schedule for the farewell week:

‘We have to give them tomorrow off because of the short week. On Sunday we go in and put the game down, watch the tape. We’ll practice early next week to get a jump start on Northwestern and add some new improvements here and there on offense and defense. Then at the end of that week we will start recruiting.”

About the status of the Hudson Card:

“It just wasn’t cleaned up in time. He was not in full approval of the protocol. Although he is doing fine now. So expect him to be available the next time we play.”

On whether they’ll play two quarterbacks in the next game:

“Let’s get to the week and evaluate it.”

If the violation was more extensive this week:

“We will continue to add wrinkles based on what the adversary presents as things we can try to attack or exploit. We get CJ Smith back next week. I think that will be huge for us. We must continue to execute. I thought we could move the ball when we were clean, we just couldn’t convert on some third and longer balls and we definitely couldn’t tolerate negative yardage plays on early downs.

On his play-calling on offense:

“I felt comfortable because I was able to get the calls I wanted to reach. I will keep getting better. I’m very thankful for the offensive staff and some of the ideas they presented and the communication on game day. But we had zero points today, so we obviously didn’t do well.”

On Corey Stewart’s status:

“I think he’s doing well.”

On maintaining buy-in:

“I didn’t have to beg them to keep playing or buy in. I think when you have failures, you need to be able to identify why you failed and come up with solutions to improve. I think if you can do that and point to something tangible, it gives a sense of hope and an explanation of how to get better. We have a group of guys that are proud and want to go out and compete and play. We don’t have to beg them to get ready, go to practice or go play.”

If they have the answers to violation:

“It’s clear that we had an explosive performance last week against a very good opponent. We just played the No. 2 team in the country. We also have a lot of young guys playing. Thought we could move the ball, but we were just on third down? 4 of 12 on third down and we were playing negative yardage early. I think we have the pieces. I think we’ll come up with more answers as we go and diversify what we do, especially in the pitching game, and we’ll continue to improve.

When starting slowly:

‘You must execute. The first drive we were moving the ball and then we had a false start and now suddenly you’re behind the chains. You can’t do that if you’re trying to boot a disc. We will continue to look at it as a staff and continue to emphasize how important it is to start quickly, but you cannot play on a negative beat. You cannot get fines for opening drives.

On Nyland Green:

‘It’s not his foot. He had a pretty bad injury and his status is kind of up in the air at the moment.”

For the rest of the year?

‘I’m not sure. We’ll see.”

About pre-snap penalties:

“I think part of the issue tonight was some of the quick operations. We were shifting and moving a lot, so they communicated a lot. So maybe we look at what our cadence is like and how we can clean that up so we don’t get defensive. I think that’s what got us tonight.

On Browne’s death:

“I thought his drop-back a week ago went really well. There were a number of reasons why the fallback game wasn’t happening tonight. Whether it was because of the time he had or because of the people who were open. Again, he’s a redshirt freshman in his second start, so there will be a learning curve. I know he had a great week a week ago. But he is still a redshirt freshman and he will continue to improve.”

On if the bye week changes due to circumstances:

“We continue to stick to our process. I don’t understand why we would change our process.”

If what they are going to do is different from what they would do in any other week off:

“It’s a bye week. We are sticking to our bye week plan.”
