What you need to know about the end of daylight saving time and the ‘fallback’ in 2024

Autumn is in full swing and Santa Claus will soon gather his reindeer to give Christmas gifts.

At least, that’s what the kids are getting excited about as winter approaches.

It’s also almost time for Daylight Savings Time to end, and many Americans are expressing fear of “backsliding.” Besides, those who complain may have a point.

According to a recent Forbes story, daylight saving time “affects us in many ways, both visible and invisible.” Neurologist and sleep physician W. Christopher Winter of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine had this to say about the practice, which affects the body’s timing mechanism and circadian rhythm – processes that control the brain:

“When we experience daylight saving time, our ability to effectively manage these systems is compromised,” Winter said. “While daylight saving time eventually feels better as we get used to using daylight saving time, these problems never really go away.”

Here’s when you can expect an hour of sleep this year.

When does daylight saving time end this year? When will Americans backslide?

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 3 at 2 a.m. local time. This is the time when most Americans “fall back” and sleep an extra hour.

When does daylight saving time start again?

Daylight saving time will start again on March 9, 2025.

What is daylight saving time?

Daylight Saving Time is the period between November and March when most Americans set their clocks forward one hour.

When did daylight saving time start?

In 2024, daylight saving time started on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time. This is when the clocks went forward an hour for most Americans.

Are there parts of the US where daylight saving time is not observed?

Yes. Arizona does not observe the time change (with the exception of the Navajo Nation) due to its desert climate, according to a USA TODAY story. Hawaii is another state that is not observed due to its proximity to the equator. American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are areas where daylight saving time is not observed.

Will Daylight Saving Time Ever End?

In 2022, a bill known as the Sunshine Protection Act was unanimously passed to make daylight saving time permanent. However, the US House of Representatives did not pass it. President Joe Biden also did not sign it. The Sunshine Protection Act of 2023 has remained stagnant in Congress.
