Fall is just around the corner, which means daylight saving time will soon start. As we approach the time change, many should prepare for an extra hour of sleep as the clocks are set back an hour. While some have wondered if this practice would be stopped, it is still in place and is expected to take place in November.

The time change occurs twice each year, forcing Americans to adjust their clocks. For more information about daylight saving time, HollywoodLife has gathered some information on this topic.

Daylight saving time takes place twice a year: first on the second Sunday in March and then again on the first Sunday in November. In the spring, the clocks move forward one hour at 2 a.m. and continue to 3 a.m. As a result, Americans lose an hour of sleep and the sunrise and sunset shifts an hour later. In autumn and winter, the clocks are turned back an hour, giving people an extra hour of sleep; at 2 a.m. the time is reset to 1 a.m. and sunrise and sunset occur an hour earlier. The purpose of daylight saving time is to save energy and make better use of daylight.

The practice was first implemented as the Standard Time Act in 1918 during World War I.

This year, daylight saving time started on March 10, moving the clocks forward one hour.

Daylight saving time starts again on November 3 and the clocks are set back one hour.

Not all 50 states observe daylight saving time. Arizona and Hawaii are not participating in the time change, per time and date.

The idea of ending daylight saving time has been discussed several times. Although the U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, which would make daylight saving time permanent, it was never passed into law. As a result, the time changes continue.
