When is Labor Day 2024? Date, Meaning, and Why We Celebrate It

play

As the air grows crisper and fall approaches, Labor Day weekend marks the transition from summer to fall. It offers one last celebration of summer while honoring the hardworking spirit that shaped our nation.

When is Labor Day?

Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September each year. This year it falls on September 2.

Why is Labor Day celebrated?

Labor Day recognizes the achievements of the American labor movement in the late 19th century. During this time, American workers began forming unions to advocate for better working conditions, reasonable hours, and fair wages.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, followed by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York later that year.

By the time President Grover Cleveland signed the day into law in 1894, 23 states had already adopted the holiday.

What are the most popular domestic destinations for Labor Day weekend 2024?

This year, many American travelers are heading to Seattle, with bookings for the Emerald City up nearly 30 percent from last year, according to AAA booking data. Some are continuing on to Alaska, with Anchorage and Juneau topping the list of most popular U.S. destinations at the end of summer.

“This is the time of year to take an Alaska cruise,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a press release. “There are fewer people than earlier in the summer, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the fall colors! It’s no surprise that Alaska cruises are sold out this Labor Day weekend.”

What are the worst times to drive during Labor Day weekend 2024?

The roads will be most congested on the afternoons of Thursday 29 August and Friday, and the early evening and morning of Saturday. Returning from the long weekend, motorists can expect the worst traffic on the afternoon of Sunday 1 September, from 11am to 8pm, on Monday and the morning of Tuesday.

“Motorists should expect the worst traffic congestion ahead of the long weekend as commuters mingle with travelers,” Bob Pishue, a transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a statement. “Monitoring traffic apps, local news stations and 511 travel information services can help drivers navigate traffic jams and reduce driver frustration on Labor Day.”

What are the best times to drive during Labor Day weekend 2024?

If you hope to avoid traffic, plan to drive at night or early in the morning. The best times to drive for Labor Day weekend are before 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, before noon or after 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and after noon on Saturday.

For the return journey, you must leave before 12:00 on Sunday 1 September, before 10:00 on Monday or after 13:00 on Tuesday.
