When is the Nations League draw and how do the promotion/relegation play-offs work?

The UEFA Nations League has undergone changes this season, with the addition of quarter-finals to the knockout stages and promotion/relegation play-offs at the end of the first stage.

England have already secured automatic promotion to League A by winning Group B2, but there is still plenty to play elsewhere, with more games in March and June.

Incredibly, that includes Scotland, who saved themselves from automatic relegation with back-to-back wins over Croatia and Poland to finish the campaign in third place in Group A1.

Andy Robertson’s dramatic winner in Warsaw means Steve Clarke’s side will play one of the League B runners-up in a two-legged play-off in March in a bid to maintain their top-flight status.

Meanwhile, Spain are the defending Nations League champions and will be looking to defend their crown against the likes of France, Portugal, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands in the Nations League final.

The draw takes place this week and here’s everything you need to know.

When is the Nations League draw?

The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on November 22 at 11am BST (UK time). This will be followed by the draw for the promotion/relegation play-offs. A stream will be available on the UEFA website.

How does the draw work?

For the quarter-finals, the winners of the League A group will be matched with the second place in the League A group. Teams from the same group, for example Germany and the Netherlands, cannot be drawn against each other. The draw for the semi-finals will then follow.

For the promotion/relegation play-offs, the following ties will be used: the third-placed teams from League A will play against the second-placed teams from League B, the third-placed teams from League B will play against the second-placed teams of League C, and the two top-ranked, fourth-placed teams from League C will face the runners-up from League D.

The promotion/relegation play-offs will be held over two legs and will be played home and away. If the higher league team wins, both teams remain in their respective leagues. If the lower division team wins, they switch places and the lower division team is promoted, while the losers are relegated.
