When is the time change?

play

For years, legislators in multiple states have pushed to keep Daylight Saving Time, or “Daylight Saving Time,” as the year-round norm. And while rumors of year-round Daylight Saving Time in Florida have been swirling for years, we’re still set to go back in 2024.

But the autumnal equinox, or “first day of fall,” will occur before we turn our clocks back. And while the clocks will soon change and leaves will start falling in some places, it will still feel like summer in Florida well into the fall.

Here’s when the official “first day of fall” is, when the time changes this fall, and when you can expect it to get cooler in Florida.

When is the first day of autumn?

There are two equinoxes and two solstices per year. Equinoxes occur in the fall and spring and are called the autumnal and vernal equinoxes. They mark the first official day of spring and the first official day of fall each year.

The summer solstice fell on a Thursday this year, June 20 at 4:51 pm EDT. And the autumnal equinox is just around the corner, on Sunday, September 22 at 8:44 am EDT, according to The Farmers’ Almanac.

The meteorological end of summer fell on Labor Day.

Has Daylight Saving Time been abolished in Florida?

Florida lawmakers introduced a bill in 2021 to extend Daylight Saving Time from eight months to the entire year.

The Sunshine Protection Act, a proposed federal law, has not yet received approval from the U.S. House of Representatives or the president. However, the bill has been introduced in several congressional sessions in recent years and is expected to pass the U.S. Senate in 2023.

Florida will still have a setback this year.

When is Daylight Saving Time 2024? When does the time change?

Daylight Saving Time for 2024 began on Sunday, March 10 at 2:00 a.m. EST for the “forward” time and ends, or goes back, on Sunday, November 2 at 2:00 a.m. EST.

What month does it cool down in Florida?

According to the National Weather Service’s September 2023 report, Florida is usually a day or two cooler in the fall, but in winter, in November, Florida typically feels noticeably and consistently cooler.

While other states enjoy the temperate weather, crisp air and changing fall leaves, Florida residents must wait until the winter months to truly feel relief from the heat.

“The initial burst of cooler, drier air is usually short-lived, lasting only a day or two. The real cooling usually doesn’t occur until November,” the NWS website says.

According to the Farmers’ Almanac’s extended 60-day weather forecast for Florida, Florida residents can still expect temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in September, as usual.

The average temperature expected in Florida this September is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (one degree below average) and about 9 inches of rain is expected throughout the month (about two inches more than average).
