When the College Football Playoffs Rankings Are Released: Playoff Bracket Information

play

The final month of the 2024 college football season is upon us, and with it comes the weekly release of the College Football Playoff rankings that determine which teams will compete for the national championship in January.

This year, the CFP field has expanded to twelve teams, and the first release of the rankings has paved the way for a lot of movement on this stretch. Oregon debuted at No. 1 as expected, while Ohio State, Georgia, Miami and Texas filled out the rest of the top five based on results through the first ten weeks of the season.

But the next set of rankings will follow the action of Week 11, when there are still a number of impactful games scheduled. Where potential conference champions are ranked, as well as the current pecking order for potential at-large teams, make this season’s CFP rankings more important (and dramatic) than previous years.

Here’s everything you need to know about how and when to watch the ESPN rankings and the format for this year’s expanded College Football Playoff.

When will the College Football Playoffs rankings be released?

The second College Football Playoff rankings of the 2024 season will be released Tuesday, November 12. A new top 25 rankings will be released by the CFP Selection Committee every Tuesday through December 3. There will be a CFP selection show on Sunday, December 8. to announce the 12-team playoff field.

What time are the CFP rankings?

The College Football Playoffs rankings are released each week via a CFP rankings show broadcast by ESPN every Tuesday, November 5 through December 3. This week’s show airs on Tuesday, November 12 starting at 8:30 PM ET.

How many teams are in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

Twelve teams will participate in the College Football Playoff for the first time this season, after college football introduced the CFP with a four-team format in 2014. The expansion to 12 teams is planned for the 2024 and 2025 college football seasons. Leaders within the sport have not yet agreed on the framework for the playoffs at this time.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The twelve participating teams in the College Football Playoff round are the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP Selection Committee, and the next seven highest ranked teams.

The four highest-ranked conference champions are seeded one through four and receive a bye in the first round. The fifth conference champion is seeded where he was among the top twelve teams, or at number 12 if he is outside the top twelve in the CFP rankings. Non-conference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded starting at No. 5.

“As a result,” the CFP warns on its website, “the placement, 1 through 12, may look different than the final ranking.”

For the first round, the higher-ranked team in each pairing (5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, 8 vs. 9) will serve as the on-campus host. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals and match up with the corresponding top-four conference champion based on seeding. Quarterfinals will be played in the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The semifinals – played at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl Classic – will take place from January 9 to 10.

The two semifinal winners will play for the national championship on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
