When Will Christian McCaffrey Play Again? Updates on the Star’s Injury

play

Week 1 of the NFL season brought numerous surprises, with the New England Patriots beating the Cincinnati Bengals and the Chicago Bears performing worse with Caleb Williams than they did a year ago with Tyson Bagent.

But the most surprising was when Christian McCaffrey was pulled at the last minute from the 49ers’ Monday Night Football game against the New York Jets.

McCaffrey made way for undrafted backup Jordan Mason, who threw for 147 yards and a touchdown. While that was great for everyone who started Mason in their fantasy leagues, it wasn’t so great for everyone who selected McCaffrey first overall. The star’s injury appears to be worse than originally thought, and everyone is wondering when he’ll get back on the field.

Below you’ll find the latest updates on McCaffrey’s ankle injury.

Why wasn’t Christian McCaffrey there?

Bay Area reporter John Dickinson reported Tuesday that McCaffrey’s injury involved his Achilles tendon and that the injury has flared up occasionally lately.

This type of injury makes Mason’s statement that he knew he would be in the 49ers’ starting lineup on Friday more understandable. Reports indicated that McCaffrey was pulled from practice on Friday because of the ankle injury, but no one seemed overly concerned at the time.

Mason was likely told he might be forced into a starting role after McCaffrey’s departure, but that was only confirmed on match day.

Will McCaffrey play in Week 2?

McCaffrey’s status for Week 2 against Minnesota is unknown. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that there is a “real chance he doesn’t play Sunday.”

As it stands, McCaffrey’s lingering injury isn’t a good sign. His ankle has been bothering him for a month now, and while there have been “no setbacks” (according to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan), the uncertainty of whether McCaffrey will be bothered by it day-to-day doesn’t bode well for his chances of returning anytime soon.

Minnesota’s home stadium, U.S. Bank Stadium, is also a turf field, which could be tough on McCaffrey’s ankle if it isn’t fully healed. San Francisco clearly doesn’t need McCaffrey at this point, so the team might be inclined to keep him out.

When Shanahan was asked by reporters if Schefter’s report that McCaffrey would likely miss Week 2 was true, she said, “That person had to have been God.”

When do the 49ers play next?

The 49ers hit the road in Week 2 to face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
