When will we know who is president?

States have touted record-breaking early voting numbers as voters cast their ballots for the next president of the United States, along with other key political seats in their areas.

In Tennessee, more than 820,000 people cast ballots in the Volunteer State and while this doesn’t break any records compared to the 2020 election, it is significantly higher than early turnout in the 2016 election, according to data from the Tennessee Attorney General . Stands.

The first five days of early voting in Tennessee in 2024 resulted in 820,587 ballots cast via early and absentee ballots. In 2020, 910,802 votes were cast, but in 2016, only 609,021 votes were cast in a similar time frame.

First voting results: when will we know?

Although these early ballots are coming in, results won’t be known for another two weeks when they are counted on Election Day on November 5.

When will we know who will be elected president?

That may take some time.

The excitement surrounding election night and the results does not mean that we will know for sure who the winner will be tomorrow morning. In 2023, President Joe Biden’s victory was announced by the Associated Press four days after Election Day.

Voters can vote during early voting and on Election Day for the candidates they think are best for the political office they are running for. But it takes some time to count all the ballots, depending on the state and current laws regarding elections.

Some recent rule changes have almost made the process longer.

After the 2020 election, when now-former President Donald Trump falsely claimed voter fraud after losing the election to Biden, some counties across the country voted not to certify the election. And even pushed to replace machine counting of ballots with having people count their ballots by hand, a practice that research shows is less accurate and timely than using machines.

In Georgia, this push almost became a reality.

A new election rule introduced in Georgia would have required thousands of poll workers to count ballots by hand. In the past month, a judge in Georgia struck down that rule, along with six others in the state, and despite pressure from Republicans to overturn the judge’s decision, the courts stood firm and poll workers are not required to review ballots to count.

Federal law requires governors to prepare documents called certificates of assurance that begin the process of convening the Electoral College to vote for a president and vice president. Secretaries of State, or other official depending on the state, compile the election results of local and provincial governments so that the winner can be declared.

Representatives of the Republican governors of New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia — all states leaning toward Harris in the polls — told USA TODAY that they plan to announce the results regardless of the winner. And top election officials in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina also said they would not be swayed.
