Which Sporting CP players could follow Ruben Amorim to Manchester United?

Ruben Amorim is Manchester United’s first choice to replace Erik ten Hag. That much has been made clear by the widespread reporting of the Old Trafford club’s pursuit of the Sporting CP manager, who has also spoken publicly about the interest in him. Amorim could soon be installed as United boss.

This would lead to changes in the team on the field. Amorim favors a back three with wing-backs. He likes to use a double turn in central midfield and allow attacking midfielders to get close to an attacking frontman. Manchester United could quickly become a very different team under the new manager if his appointment is confirmed.

It would be fair to assume that Amorim would also push for new additions to his squad in January and next summer when the transfer window opens again. Ten Hag left Manchester United loaded with ill-advised signings he insisted on and so Amorim will have to reshape the unbalanced squad he is expected to inherit.

Viktor Gyokeres is certainly a player Amorim would like to bring to Old Trafford. The Swedish striker has been on fire this season, scoring no fewer than sixteen goals in just thirteen games for Sporting CP. Gyokeres would give Manchester United the kind of presence in the penalty area that they currently lack.

Ousmane Diomande is another Sporting CP player who would improve the squad at Old Trafford. The Ivorian is widely regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in European football, having developed under Amorim in recent seasons. A move to the Premier League would give him the opportunity to develop further.

Pote is one of the best creative midfielders in Liga Portugal, with seven goals in six games for Sporting CP this season. At 26, the Portugal international could be open to a new challenge after failing to conquer the Premier League during a spell at Wolves earlier in his career.

Manchester United have had success with purchases in the Portuguese market in the past. Bruno Fernandes came over from Sporting CP, just like Cristiano Ronaldo. It would make sense for United to try to make Amorim more comfortable in his new surroundings by signing some of the players who previously flourished under him.

That said, one of Manchester United’s biggest mistakes under Ten Hag was giving the Dutchman too much influence over transfer strategy. It might be foolish to do the same once Amorim is appointed. Nevertheless, there could be a good reason for United to take a look at some of the players Amorim has already coached.
