Who is Susie Wiles, Trump’s new White House chief of staff?

Susie Wiles has been named President-elect Donald Trump’s new White House chief of staff.

Wiles would become the first woman to ever play a prominent role as the president’s closest advisor and counselor.

Here’s what you need to know about Wiles.

Who is Susie Wiles?

Susie Wiles, the daughter of NFL player and sportscaster Pat Summerall, worked in the office of New York Rep. in the 1970s. Jack Kemp in Washington. Wiles also had stints with Ronald Reagan’s campaign and in his White House as a planner.

Wiles traveled to Florida and advised two mayors of Jacksonville and worked for Rep. Tillie Fowler. Wiles was also credited with helping businessman Rick Scott win the governor’s office.

She briefly managed Utah Governor Jon Huntsman’s 2012 presidential campaign and managed Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign in Florida, when his victory in the state helped him win the White House, the Associated Press reported.

Wiles usually avoids the spotlight

Susie Wiles is one of the few top officials to survive an entire Trump campaign and was part of the team that put together a more professional operation for his third bid for the White House. Wiles has avoided the spotlight and even refused to speak as Trump celebrated his election victory early Wednesday morning.

According to the AP, Wiles showed she was not above taking on volunteer duties. During one of Trump’s appearances in Iowa in 2023, as Trump posed for photos with voters, Wiles grabbed a clipboard and began approaching individuals waiting to fill out cards committing to Trump’s caucus in the early primaries.

In a few more posts on X in 2024, Wiles responded after billionaire Mark Cuban said Trump didn’t have “strong, intelligent women” around him. Following Wiles’ selection as White House chief of staff, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, a Trump supporter, joked on X that the newly elected president had chosen a “strong, intelligent woman” as his chief of staff.

Wiles has worked with Ron DeSantis

Susie Wiles helped get Ron DeSantis elected governor of Florida. The AP reported that DeSantis and Wiles developed a rift that led to DeSantis urging Trump’s 2020 campaign to cut ties with Wiles when she again ran the then-president’s statewide campaign.

Wiles only posted three times this year on X, formerly Twitter, at the time of her announcement. Before DeSantis withdrew from the presidential race in January, Wiles jumped on social media and responded to a report that DeSantis had cleared his campaign website of upcoming events with a short but clear message: “Bye, bye.”

Can Wiles control Trump’s impulses?

Susie Wiles was able to control Donald Trump’s impulses by earning his respect and showing him that he would be better off if he followed her advice.

The AP noted that during later stages of his campaign, when Trump gave a speech in Pennsylvania in which he strayed from his talking points and suggested he wouldn’t mind the media getting shot, Wiles came out to stare at him silently .

The president-elect often referred to Wiles on the campaign trail, praising her leadership on what he said was his “best run campaign.” ‘She’s incredible. Unbelievable,” Trump said at a rally in Milwaukee in November.

Will Wiles have lasting power as Trump’s chief of staff?

During his first administration, Donald Trump had four chiefs of staff. According to the AP, a chief of staff serves as a confidante to the president, helping to implement an agenda and balance competing political and policy priorities. They also often act as a gatekeeper, helping to figure out who the president is spending his time on and speaking to.

The AP noted that Trump has said he believes the biggest mistake of his first term was hiring the wrong people. The former president was new to Washington DC at the time, he said, and didn’t know any better. But now, Trump says, he knows the “best people” and the ones to avoid for a job.
