Who Michael Phelps Chose During Week 2 of ESPN’s GameDay

play

Michael Phelps captured the hearts of Sun Devils fans when he donned the burgundy and gold jersey for Arizona State as a volunteer assistant, but the 23-time gold medalist represented Michigan as a guest host for ESPN’s “College GameDay” in Week 2.

Saturday’s show traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the highly anticipated SEC/Big Ten matchup between No. 9 Michigan and No. 3 Texas. Phelps wore maize and blue in favor of the home team.

Like his time as an ASU supporter, Phelps’ messages of support are woven into his every move wherever his head coach, Bob Bowman, goes. When Bowman was coaching swimmers at ASU from 2015 through this past season, Phelps was spotted in Tempe serving as a volunteer assistant coach.

But Michigan holds a special place in Phelps’ heart and on his body, as during the broadcast he showed off a tattoo of a Michigan “M” on his hip.

“It was a dream come true to be able to spend four years here,” Phelps said during the broadcast. “My coach was the head coach here. I swam here and it was the best experience. Honestly, this is what it’s all about. There’s nothing better than this feeling on competition day. I have hair on my arms that stands up. I’m excited and ready to go.”

After Phelps’ second Olympic appearance, Bowman became head coach of Michigan’s swimming program. The then 19-year-old followed him to Ann Arbor to continue his training.

While there for more than four years, Phelps took classes but did not graduate. Due to NCAA rules at the time, he was unable to join the swim team because of his Speedo endorsement. Instead, he served as a volunteer assistant coach.
